    FAO Non-Americans

I can't tell you how many friends have called from overseas saying, "Come on, do you naïve people in America really believe Barack Obama is going to win?" One friend incredulously asked over the weekend, "Do you think there is any way that America elects a black man for president?!" Let alone one named Barack Obama?

They don't believe we have it in us. That's an important statement. They don't believe in America. They think we have fake ideals and use our purported American values as a guise to steal other people's natural resources. They think we are now -- and always have been -- run by the George W. Bush's of the world. They think John McCain is exactly that type of man and the powers that be are going to make sure he wins no matter what.
Can we put aside superficialities to elect the most competent man no matter what his name or race is? Are we big enough to do that?

What exactly have we done recently to dispel them of that notion? I obviously disagree, but I can't say I'm surprised that someone that doesn't live here might think that, based upon the coverage we probably get oversees.

Remember hurricane Kartina. From the coverage they saw, it was a bunch of black people being stranded in a drowning city. A lot of friends from overseas took the impresion that black people werent treated the best in the US.

I think we actually agree with one another on this. Am I missing something?

On a totally different note, I had an exchange with someone on another board earlier today in which Hurricane Katrina was trumpeted as a success for the republican party. Shit like that alerts you that intelligent discussion is impossible.

disagree. voting for someone on the basis of color is a racist thing, no matter which side of the coin you look at.

voting for issue-based, vision-based thing is another. It just so happens that Obama has met the crossroads with america with millions of us sick of what the last few years have been like.

if Obama was pushing mccains policies, i would definitely not vote for him, and i hope some of you have the balls to admit this. It's not that he's black (he's only half black anyway), but even those his policies suck, they're less-suck than mccain, significantly. and he's demonstrated himself to be cool calm and collected.

Wait till jindal in 2012. you'll see a massive outpouring of people who like mccain/palin voting for this guy simply to prove they aren't racist.

                  fascinating.

as far as 'if we can handle a black president', fuck the rest of the world. I'm more inclined to listen to them on matters of foreign policy, and foreign policy only.

As much as i dont want obama to win, the only good i see out of him winning is the end of the careers of Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton. Hopefully it will be the end of affirmative action.

sometimes the hardest thing to do is look in the mirror. What is really sad is what America has become.

I disagree. I am very proud to be an American. It is still the land of opportunity and the greatest country to live in. I wouldn't want to live any where else.

yea from all my travels ive come to enjoy where i live, seattle, because its very openminded to other areas of the states. i forget that all states aren't like mine and when i travel around i'll notice little differences that are big differences.

there are people in other countries who are much freer, and then there are people who aren't free at all, but to say america is a free nation anymore is silly imo.

it never really has been. its free to those who don't ruffle its feathers perhaps.

that said, i was really happy moving back to seattle from london after 4 years. i was much freer in london than i was in america, but the everyday people you deal with were total dicks. and i really missed how excited americans are. they love a good story and they love a good bit of friendly banter.

I wish I could move to Seattle.. I have never been but pics are always amazing. Must go before I die for sure!!

I agree the US still is the land of opportunity but with Martial Law on the horizon and with financial criminals still out there running your markets it is getting hard to say that you guys are a free society. I mean you guys are fighting for Iraq to be free yet nobody is fighting on the homeland to secure your freedoms. Do you know that Bush is trying to make himself immune from punishment in the future for the torturing and rendition that has been going on?? I mean Jesus you guys have lost your way over the last decade and with these two candidates I see before me it is going to be another bad four years.
