    Fractals

Visit the companion website to the NOVA program Hunting the Hidden Dimension, watch streaming video of the hour-long broadcast episode, read an interview with maverick mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot and create and save your own wildly colorful fractals.

I watched this the other night, it was about Benoit Mandelbrot and fractals, it was pretty damn cool. Talked about how nature that looks disorganized is really not that complicated and can be measured. They showed examples of how fractal geometry can be used to measure something as complex as a coastline, and also how some scientists are trying to predict the amount of co2 a large area of rainforest can absorb just be measuring some dimensions on one tree of the forest and then extrapolating from there how to measure the entire forest. It was a very cool show.

I also watched this. Fucking brilliant. Measuring the tree and all its dimensions at the end which predicted the placement of different diameter trees throughout the forest was incredible. Amazing stuff.

NOVA = WIN!! Love that show.

i like to think that we know next to nothing of universal nature or wateva, and the boundlessness and endlessness it has to offer us noobs.

              +1

I watched this same show last night and it was wicked. I esp loved the part they talked about the how the size of trees growing within a certain area was proportionate to the site of each independent branch on a tree. that blew my mind

I think it is safe to say we don't know a lot about a lot. This Fractals study may open the doors for a lot of future formulas and such. Magnetic fields is another thing we don't really know shit about.
