I think it would have been very easy for a candidate (of any party) to think running for the highest office in the states, with a country depending on you - to put the campaign first.

You see it (putting job ahead of family) all the time in businesses where people want to succeed.

Either way. Not worth a fight.

When you become CEO, you're not voted in by the public. You're voted in by a board of directors. They are top executives like you and they may not care as much about subtler aspects of your character.

When you become President, you are voted in by the public. They spend a lot of time on the character thing, and the opposing candidates spend a lot of time finding ways to smear your character. It's not a great strategy for getting votes to demonstrate that you'll let your own family drop dead for the sake of your political opportunism. People tend not to like it.
