Re: Lacie 1TB External Hard Drive - keep it?

    oof! Expecting this delivered today.

    Good news...mad low price ($159 shipped - 25% Cashback from MSLive/Ebay)

Bad news...these drives tend to have a good sized firmware problem (SD17). Apparently disabling write cache or partitioning <1TB prevents this (drive will "freeze" because of the write cache, then come back OK...rendering it useless for streaming media basically).

I'll cross my fingers...many problems came from what I've read because of RAID setups, controllers, etc. Mine's just a lowly single for the main system. Quite frankly, I've only had like 2-3 HD's fail on me over the past 12 years...and I've used all the brands practically.

I'll just copy data and let it all run together for a while, before cleaning the other drives off....got a cooler for this thing too waiting, as they also generate a nice bit of heat.

Total amount of storage space now: 3.6 TB

Re: Lacie 1TB External Hard Drive - keep it?

I'm interested in getting larger drives to condense all of mine but damn them all for still running strong. My storage box has 6 x 250GB and this box has 2 x 750GB, 1 x 74GB and 1 x 500GB while I have a stack of about 16 drives ranging from 80GB to 250GB sitting next to my desk. Weee!

a buddy of mine asked me for some music for his house, he bought a 1TB Lacie for me to copy onto, I've never heard an external drive make so much noise, what a nuisance.

Kamal is this really true? I am ready to purchase 2 external Seagate drives, but I re-read this thread again and found the quote above...

Quoting from wikipedia's raid article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redunda...endent_disks):

                            * RAID 1 (mirrored settings/disks) could be described as a real-time backup solution. Two (or more) disks each store exactly the same data, at the same time, and at all times. Data is not lost as long as one disk survives. Total capacity of the array is simply the capacity of one disk. At any given instant, each disk in the array is simply identical to every other disk in the array.

well I finally broke down and bought two of these puppies:
