    Jesse Jackson's Tears

One of the most memorable images of Obama's election night acceptance speech was Jesse Jackson weeping in the crowd. He was asked to explain why he was crying, and here's what he said:

He said: "Well, on the one hand, I saw President Barack Obama standing there looking so majestic.

"And I knew that people in the villages of Kenya and Haiti, and mansions and palaces in Europe and China, were all watching this young African-American male assume the leadership to take our nation out of a pit to a higher place.

"And then, I thought of who was not there,'' Jackson said. "Medgar Evers, the husband of Sister Myrlie. ...So the martyrs and murdered whose blood made last night possible. I could not help think that this was their night.

"And if I had one wish: If Medgar, or if Dr. King could have just been there for a second in time, would have made my heart rejoice. And so it was kind of duo-fold -- his ascension into leadership and the price that was paid to get him there."

I'm not a big fan of Jesse Jackson, largely because I think he is a divisive figure who does more harm for race relations than good by often casting the issues of the day as "us vs. them." This, however, was a really nice sentiment.

Agreed. Not a big fan of Jesse Jackson, but it was very nice to see him in that light. Evers and Dr. King are surely smiling...

fuck that. he's crying because his future in race-baiting politics is over. and it's better for blacks and whites that he's not a voice anymore.

folks, forget the messenger for a moment and consider the message. imagine if MLK actually got to come back for a moment to see this significant step in the furtherance of his Dream. that's a pretty powerful thought, I think...

Thank you. Even the black people who went crazy for obama winning said they were pissed when they saw jackson crying. They all pointed out the guy has not done one damn thing for black people except ride the coat-tails of Martin Luther King.

Martin Luther King tried to bring races together, where people like Jessie Jackon and Al Sharpton try to keep races apart. 88Mariner said it best, he is crying because his career is over. No more affirmative action.

I do agree with those that have pointed out that his whole song and dance takes a serious hit with Obama's election. Obama promotes racial quality by example in a way that Jackson and Sharpton cannot.

                Re: Jesse Jackson's Tears

He was crying for a couple of reasons:

                1. Because he wanted to be the first black president, but won't get to be.
                2. Because he now has one less "racial injustice" to complain about, and his career is built on that.

And then MLK would kick Jessie's ass for how he fucked up all of his work.

                          MLK was a great man.

Exactly, fuck jesse jackson. If anything, my conspiracy theory is that he and rev wright got together and said the things they did because Obama wouldn't be as radical as they are.
