About 18 months ago I put up my name to join the fire department of my city (as volunteer). Three months ago I got a letter inviting me for the physical and technical tests as 19 new volunteers would be admitted.
I killed myself the weeks after that doing interval training, weight lifting, plyometrics, ... 6 days out of 7. Which paid off: I kicked ass at the physical tests and ended in the top 5.
Right, next hurdle were the technical tests. Full score on that (dah, my field of expertise is occupational health and safety).
So you might think that after an intake interview you would get selected, right?
WRONG!
I ended up 22nd on the list and was not selected since "The candidate talked more about himself than about his motivation to join the corps. The jury has the impression that his only motivation was to use fire department trainings for his own professional benefits and the candidate could not motivate us otherwise. Furthermore the jury has the impression that the candidate is not a team player and team spirit is paramount in the department". WHAT THE FUCK????
Seriously, if you wanna know about my motivation, ASK ABOUT MY MOTIVATION. If you're not interested in my background, DON'T ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT MY BACKGROUND. And oh yes, surely I'm gonna sweat my ass off training for the physical tests and be on duty every other weekend to steal trainings when I can get a certificate of intervention leader after 2 days of training paid by my company. Yup, makes perfect sense. Let's not forget I'm a loner, right? In my job I work together with people from floor to management level, so I must be socially handicapped...
No need to say that the motivation to put me on 22nd place is FUBAR (especially since apart from myself there were only two other guys with a university degree, the rest had only lower technical training), so I pulled some strings to find out what the deal was and guess what? The real motivation was that the officers in the jury suspected that I would make officer in no time and fuck them out of their job, or at least would question their judgement from time to time.
I feel so much better now knowing that if I'm in a car wreck or if my house is on fire, I'll be rescued by a team of guys that were selected because they're less competent than the officers in charge. Hoo-fucking-ra!
Anyhooters, I'm taking this shit all the way up to the mayor.
I have murder on my mind, seriously. Or better yet, arson
