Re: Does electronic music change the way you think?
simonr, thanks for the post, its been a couple of months since I last was in the mood for jazz.
I think any kind of music is able to change the way you think, Stravinsky opened my mind with his 20 minutes long compositions, Firebird or the Rite of Spring. Miles Davis literally drove me a couple of steps closer to madness with his Bitches Brew album. I think I I'm only able to appreciatte EDM because I was raised listening to all kinds of music and I believe EDM to be a recollection of it all.
I love house music, It makes me feel alive.Comment

Re: Does electronic music change the way you think?
I'll have to wait for youtube to get back up before I can watch those videos.
I personally blame all this digital music for my musical inability to just sit and enjoy a cd. I get so much stuff and can't spend hours listening everyday like I could when I was 17. I get into my car with my 80 gig Ipod that is all but 4 gig's full and can't figure out what to try to listen to for that particular trip. ARGHHHH! I miss the days when I could only carry 6-7 CD's at a time.
I used to have 3 x 200cd binders in my car all the time..
now I have a 20gb, 2gb, 8gb ipod/nano's and i just scroll aimlessly finally landing on a mix ive heard 10 times before..
the endless scrollwheel........

EST caught my attention with "From Gagarin's Point of View" which floored me and is also recommended for a 1st taste - I caught them every tour since: in a live environment they took things to another level, and their live album "Live In Hamburg" from 2007 catches the magic.sigpicSimonR
This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.Comment

Miles told John Mclaughlin to play the chords slowly like he was learning them for the 1st time - the simplicity, with the lush keyboards from Joe Zawinul/Herbie Hancock/Chick Corea and Wayne Shortser's haunting Soprano Sax makes this one of the classic jazz crossover albums. The editing process was ground-breaking at the time, and Miles is in fine form too.sigpicSimonR

Re: Does electronic music change the way you think?
You also mentioned Allan Holdsworth, his stuff is out there too, give Sonny Sharrock a listen, he was a big influence on Vernon Reid, saw Holdsworth with Frank Gimbale back in the early nineties, there guitar stuff just melts your brain. Last Exit is something worth checking out, a project, Bailey, John Zorn, and Bill Laswell were all in, just recently saw Bill Frisell with Medeski, Martin, and Wood, now that is some fried jazz.
I absolutely love Holdsworth, to me his playing and music is very spiritual. Especially the music from Wardenclyffe Tower. That album sends me into orbit.Comment

Got all the Miles box sets - among my favourites is the "In a silent way" 3-disc set: I love putting it on at Christmas time it just seems to fit in with the lights down, the lights on the tree and snow outside. Plus your loved one or a nice glass of vino complements it too !

Have you ever read his autobiography? AWESOME read, if you are into Jazz you would love it. It's like sitting at Miles' home and hearing him talk about all the shit he's done over the years.

pulled out some Jaco stuff today. And one of my old favourites from jazz ensemble, "Donna Lee" which was nearly impossible to play on trombone....you could put an Emfire release on for 2 minutes and you would be a sleep before it finishes - Chunky
it's RA. they'd blow their load all over some stupid 20 minute loop of a snare if it had a quirky flange setting. - Tiddles

I don't want to bring religion into this topic...However, I have noticed that myself and others who tend to be agnostic/atheist tend to listen to electronic more so than my friends who are not. I could go further into this, but I will leave it at that.Comment

go further. this brings up a number of questions I've come up with over several years.you could put an Emfire release on for 2 minutes and you would be a sleep before it finishes - Chunky

Like it has been said many times. Miles re-invented Jazz a number of times in his life.

The album is "A Strange Place For Snow" ... it was their landmark album Greg. An essential for any music fan.

Re: Does electronic music change the way you think?
Oh hell bro, you can't mention an experimental guitarist I haven't heard of. I used to actively search that stuff out. And Last Exit was a fucking awesome band that produced some seriously sick stuff Peter Brotzmann is an awesome sax man. Have you ever heard the album Frisell did with Vernon Reid in the last 80's...one of the only experimental albums I can't listen to. It just sounds boring to me.

Frisell is awesome - I caught his trio years ago (having seen him with Naked City) and you hanged on his every note : he's a truly unique guitarist. Some of the David Torn stuffs pretty good.
I'm a big Mike Stern fan too (esp. his early Atlantic records) - seen him a couple of times at the 55-Bar in NYC.
For older stuff Joe Pass is probably the most under-rated of them all - his complete Pacific Jazz box set is sublime http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinf...mber=207-MD-CD
