I used to have the two "painting with guitar videos" from David Torn. That guy is wild, and hes supposed to be deaf in one ear too.

I've actually put a few Scott Henderson videos on youtube.

          since you won't, i will.

this was actually a conversation i had with my christian girlfriend last week. we were talking about religion, music and what emotion has to do with both... i had told her that i went to church all my life and never really absorbed the "message" that was preached by the pastor but could see how emotional people could get listening to him and the music played in church (i grew up pentecostal, now am an atheist). i told her that music was used as a tool to get people to feel a certain something, maybe spiritual about thier religion/god. she told me that because house music is pure emotion and is that emotional outlet for me, that in a sense, has filled the void or taken the place of god for me. i couldnt disagree with her...

there is this something that i will always remember, standing in the middle of a good 10,000 people going nuts to sasha and digweed for new years in downtown la...seeing the light stage, comparing it to a church pulpit and thinking s&d were my preachers, the crowd was the congergation praising the music and the music was god itself manifested through sound(holy spirit). honestly for me it was more of a spiritual experince than i have ever had in a church...

            THIS!

but an analogy like this is not complete without noting that actually going to church is a lot like going to a tiesto concert.

If you want to learn more about how music can really be more a part of your life and learn how music relates to life and everything else there is in the world. I recommend checking out the Victor Wooten book "The Music Lesson" by the time you get to the 8th lesson you really get into learning the real depths of music and life.

Oh Chris, that book will enlighten you soo much bro. You pretty much have to read it twice because soo much of it is sooo different from anything we have been taught in the past.

I just think that we all do way to many drugs... jk obv

What a fascinating thread. The book Jeff mentioned is going to be ordered for sure and the vids that Simon posted were fucking amazing as well (Mummy I have found something else I want for xmas, lol).

Bit of a ramble really but something I love so much about edm and particuarly deep dark stuff is slipping off into the zone and listening to the way a tune builds up from the most simple beat to the peak of the tune and back down again, layer by layer. It definitly changes the way I think when im in that state (and I dont even mean an intoxicated state, just a sick tune does it to me) and I genuinly think it can be compared to meditation in lots of ways. All meditation is focusing your mind on one thing which allows the rest of your mind to rest/reorganise/open or whatever and this is most certianly what happens to me. Sometimes I even subconciously start making analogies in my mind about the universe and life being comparable to the different layers and sounds in a track coming and going, ebbing and flowing and coming together at just the right times in order to create something perfect like nature (or a ridiculously good tune, lol)

Wow, that could potentially sound like complete bullshit but I really dont care. If anyone will get what im banging on about it will be you lot

One other thing, whoever said that they dont think that people who listen to shitty pop dont get similar feeling to what we all get is wrong imo. Im sure most of them dont coz they are just like casual listeners or whatever, just like a large portion of clubbers. But I have no doubt that some of them listen to their favourite artist or tune and it really does something to them deep down the way edm does to us....

Yeah that's what I like about EDM, when you find the right kinda music (though I think this would apply to many genres), it's so cerebral and emotional and mind expanding at the same time. It's like multi-tasking on the dancefloor, your body is following a groove, your mind is following some sounds, your subconscious is just doing whatever it does.

The only time I've actually related EDM to life, the universe and everything is when I'm tripping balls or coming down. Last year coming down from shrooms and it was raining, I saw the water dripping and falling and the way a drop would fall as a drop or elongate, began to look like beats and transitions to me

But such episodes aside, I really do think EDM has changed the way I think somewhat, maybe just the way I appreciate certain things, perhaps sifting them into layers, breaking them into components while holding a big picture in my head. Who knows.

I listen to all "quality" music and I see it/hear it all differently from others that much I am sure...I regularly get goosebumps from songs and I feel like i am on ex...When I have my headphones on I tend to burst into dance in odd places i.e. the gym, the train..I really don't care I just close my eyes and I am gone...its really the way I see music all the time...I close my eyes and I am alone on a field and the sound just sweeps over me....some people like the togetherness of EDM...I like the aloneness. I like to stand somewhere in the back at parties and just dance on my own with my eyes closed and enjoy the music. This is why I have managed to go out on my own and have a great time without actually talking to anyone all night.

As for music changing the way I think about things yeah maybe...I could say it puts things into perspective in a way...some music makes me feel like i am in heaven really and that i could actually live with that song, it becoming the soundtrack of my life.

Thanks Andy. I think you'll definitely dig the book. It'll definitely change the way you look at music and it's relations to life.

Now about using music as an escape...we all do that. But when it comes to getting really in deep with each sound. Have any of you ever listened to Microsound stuff such as Taylor Dupree...http://www.12k.com as the music these guys make is really something I admire and would like to listen more to. But to me it is like painting. You can't spend all your day around this kind of purity, one needs something to break the silences. Oh and you can check sound samples from the site too.
