Does electronic music change the way you think?

Was listening to Digweed on the train to work, and getting lost in a segment of the music (25 mins of Kiss 100 - 2008-09-21 Part 2 - John Digweed live @ Koolhaus 2008-4-11 http://www.archive1.mercuryserver.co...igweed_Pt2.mp3)

And I'm used to listening to EDM in layers and following different sounds, so there're all these synths and beats going on and I'm thinking, wow mental.

Obviously who we are affects how we listen to music (eg I'm analytical), but does it work the other way? I was wondering if the type of music we listen to also affects the way we think, which again affects how we listen to the music?

Like I'm assuming people who listen to classical, or jazz, or rock, might appreciate all these instruments or sounds coming together, they appreciate structure or improvisation, but does the music in turn change the way the listeners think?

    I wonder how pop/Top 40s listeners feel.

Re: Does electronic music change the way you think?

I listen to all types of music and play guitar .. so i've always been more interested in instrumentals.

I spent ages listening to jazz and that really opened up my mind to what was going on musically within the group and I began to appreciate piano, drums and bass rather than the lead instruments. This has made me appreciate the components of EDM more.

Usually its a beautiful/clever/dark melody, chord/key change, or musical interaction or even a sound that catches my attention ... or it can be a driving build up.

The thing I also love about EDM is its unpredictable and new, you never know whats coming next or where you're taken - particularly when a great DJ is on top of his game ... and, even though it may just be playing records, that improvisational approach is similar to jazz in its own unique way.

Also jazz has standards which are constantly re-interpretted , EDM has classics which are remixed.

Check out the late and truly great Esbjorn Svensson Trio - a genuis (and thoroughly nice person) who died in 2008 leaving a chasm behind that in musical terms will never be filled. Its been a horrible year for losing people.

Yes, it changes the way I think.. I become psychoanalytical, I try to understand human emotion and my mind develops as the music develops..

Funny, I was thinking something along these lines on the way to work.. I was thinking how people pick and choose things in life based on their feelings and emotions, and how you cant fault that in a person..

I learn to appreciate the simple things in life, see things from another perspective. I dont just think of me piloting my car down a highway.. instead, i see myself turning the corner and coming down the road into the sun, like a movie....

i dont think people that listen to pop music analyze that way, they just hear "sound" and meaningless tones.. songs do not have any quality about them.. they are just musical noise.. a bunch of vowels strung together in harmony..

Re: Does electronic music change the way you think?

Great music man really and truly...some of the best live performance I have heard...I always thought live performances were somewhat disappointing but this is seriously good...the build up, the jazzy improvisation sound of the piano...the bending of notes...really good and the drummer is excellent.

I listen to all "quality" music and I see it/hear it all differently from others that much I am sure...I regularly get goosebumps from songs and I feel like i am on ex...When I have my headphones on I tend to burst into dance in odd places i.e. the gym, the train..I really don't care I just close my eyes and I am gone...its really the way I see music all the time...I close my eyes and I am alone on a field and the sound just sweeps over me....some people like the togetherness of EDM...I like the aloneness. I like to stand somewhere in the back at parties and just dance on my own with my eyes closed and enjoy the music. This is why I have managed to go out on my own and have a great time without actually talking to anyone all night.

As for music changing the way I think about things yeah maybe...I could say it puts things into perspective in a way...some music makes me feel like i am in heaven really and that i could actually live with that song, it becoming the soundtrack of my life.

Re: Does electronic music change the way you think?

I'll have to wait for youtube to get back up before I can watch those videos.

But. I was into Metal and Jazz and Experimental way before I even knew about House music. These are three types of sound where there is lots of layers. Even in metal. Most people never really recognize just how technical Metal is. and especially things like Death Metal and how fast and technical that is.

Then I think about Jazz and I think about the John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola recordings of their ever so freaking technical bands. Then listening to Allan Holdsworth and his group where it took me forever to find out what the hell was going on with that. Now I listen to a lot of Jazz piano trios and things of that too. The Ginger Baker Trio "Going back home" CD is AWESOME for anyone interested...Bill Frisell on guitars. That guy is amazing.

And then the experimental side being John Cage, Derek Bailey, Henry Kaiser, Stockhausen, Riley, Reich, Glass and especially Dan Stearns...who I highly recommend checking out...
http://www.zebox.com/daniel_anthony_stearns/ where you can hear some of this geniuses music. Listening to this guy is like putting on three records at one time and trying to listen to them together. Insanity, but beautiful stuff.

I feel as if all my time listening to these types of sound have given me an idea of things i like in house music. I can dig really minimal stuff "Hawtin" but at the same time I can't listen to Villalobos as I feel his music has no energy to it...like Hawtins does. I can dig techy stuff like Jim Rivers, but unfortunately in these two types of house, there is way more crap than good stuff. I've gotten so into my own tastes as of lately that it's really hard to listen to mix cd's, as my musical wants change so radically nowadays.

I personally blame all this digital music for my musical inability to just sit and enjoy a cd. I get so much stuff and can't spend hours listening everyday like I could when I was 17. I get into my car with my 80 gig Ipod that is all but 4 gig's full and can't figure out what to try to listen to for that particular trip. ARGHHHH! I miss the days when I could only carry 6-7 CD's at a time.

^ Wow Derek Bailey, Henry Kaiser, Stockhausen, never thought I'd see those names thrown around here, some pretty dynamic jazz from that vid, new convert with EST, sounds like someone, melted Roni Size, LTJ Bukem, and Ninja Tune all together, great stuff.

You also mentioned Allan Holdsworth, his stuff is out there too, give Sonny Sharrock a listen, he was a big influence on Vernon Reid, saw Holdsworth with Frank Gimbale back in the early nineties, there guitar stuff just melts your brain. Last Exit is something worth checking out, a project, Bailey, John Zorn, and Bill Laswell were all in, just recently saw Bill Frisell with Medeski, Martin, and Wood, now that is some fried jazz.

It often happens that friends of mine ask me if I made a pact with the devil to still look young... And my reply is always the same:
IT'S ALL IN THE MIND, AND THE BODY FOLLOWS.

And as far as I am concerned, a major stimulus for my mind is EDM, and more specifically the progressive house music, but that is just me...
