    Indie/Dance Distributors go bust....

It's been a bad week for distributors, with news that both Neuton and Pinnacle are to fold.

In an e-mail sent out today by The Association of Independent Music, it was reported that Pinnacle has now gone into administration and labels should "take the necessary steps to protect your stock and your credit position." Whilst Pinnacle are more commonly associated with major labels and rock acts, This Is Not An Exit, R&S and Smalltown Supersound are amongst the imprints that utilize the distributor.

This follows news reported by FOEM earlier this week that Neuton have also announced to their distributed labels that they are insolvent. The German-based company serves a large amount of independent dance labels such as Perlon, Vakant and Dirtybird.

You might think that the bad news ends there, but it also happens that Canadian distributor Fusion 3 has also let go of all of their label managers and sales reps. Electronic disco producer Andrew Allsgood wrote on DJHistory.com that "lagging retail sales combined with EMI's failure to handle the large catalogue are sited [sic] as reasons for the demise. I'm not sure where they stand with the distributed labels but I'm sure there are many small labels out there that'll not see any $$$ owed."

Those looking for a little bit of light, unfortunately, may be on a long search. It seems like the problems with the distribution network may not end here, Tiny Sticks' Duncan Stump (AKA Mock) in the same thread on DJHistory.com wrote, "I've only just recovered from when Amato went under, and although I'm not with Pinnacle, it'll have a serious knock on effect," presumably as labels scramble to locate another distributor to help find outlets for their releases going forward.

Pinnacle handled over 400 labels including Rough Trade, Def Jux, King St, Marine Parade, One Little Indian and Bedrock

      /thought

the art of digging in the crates is impervious to label distribution/hegemony, as well as the worried extinction of wax.

digital is the way of the walk now no doubt, and digital will salvage/suppliment vinyl operations. the mass labels and greedy executives. will corrode and wither eventually.

well, add that, plus the fact that you can't structure layers of different sounds/beats like ableton does. Vinyl aint going away tho. not a chance.

Personally, i would like to see see some vinyl pressing business start to take small orders so I could convert a few tracks from Beatport onto vinyl. Starting with that new mix of Ohmna.
you could put an Emfire release on for 2 minutes and you would be a sleep before it finishes - Chunky

it's RA. they'd blow their load all over some stupid 20 minute loop of a snare if it had a quirky flange setting. - Tiddles

whoa, i'm dont think he meant structure.. nothing about ableton..
edit: nevermind... i think you meant dj'ing vinyl vs. dj'ing digital

just plain 'distribution' i'm waiting for more dist. to drop mp3 and start releasing only in FLAC and WAV.

I'm still working at integrating zee 1s and 2s and Ableton.

yeah, hopefully some middle-ground synthesis will be established in the future between all this madness. staying positive.

                Re: Indie/Dance Distributors go bust....

The thing is, digital sales dont really supplement the income of most labels. The only show in town that achieves decent sales for established labels is Beatport - no other digital store comes close to the sales labels get from them, but seeing as some labels operating finaces are mainly kept ticking over by album/compilation and to a lesser extent vinyl sales, then you can see why this doesnt bode well.

The Pinnacle thing will impact the cd market moreso - take Bedrock for example, they released two albums in the last quarter and whether they see any return from physical sales of those remains to be seen.
