Arafat lies 'brain dead' in Paris

    By Wafa Amr

PARIS (Reuters) - Yasser Arafat was critically ill in a French military hospital on Friday after falling into a coma, and a senior official said some of the Palestinian president's powers had been handed to his prime minister. Aides said the condition of the 75-year-old leader, a decades-old symbol of the Palestinian struggle against Israel for a state, deteriorated on Thursday.

But the aides and a hospital spokesman denied reports he was dead. They also dismissed reports he was brain dead, although the exact nature of his illness remained unclear. "President Arafat is in a very serious condition," said one senior Palestinian official, declining to be named. "He is still in a coma. The sense people are getting is that they are increasingly pessimistic."

Dozens of Arafat supporters gathered in front of the hospital in the southwest Paris surburb of Clamart, waving flags and holding up pictures of the Palestinian leader. French President Jacques Chirac visited Arafat on Thursday afternoon. "If he's dying tonight, I will be here," one Palestinian supporter told French radio. "I like this man a lot."

Arafat's condition has raised fears of chaos among Palestinians locked in a 4-year-old uprising against Israel. Security had been boosted at Jewish settlements in the West Bank for fear of mass violence against them, Israeli TV said.

    FORMER GUERRILLA

The death of a Palestinian leader Israel and Washington see as an obstacle to peace could reshuffle the cards in the Middle East conflict. The former guerrilla is loved by most Palestinians and reviled by many Israelis. A senior Palestinian official said Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie, a leading moderate, had taken over some of Arafat's powers for security and financing.

Arafat has not named a successor and had earlier been reluctant to cede any powers. Palestinian security services held an emergency meeting late on Thursday at Arafat's shell-battered headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah, security sources said.

President Bush, responding to the reports about Arafat's death, said: "God bless his soul." "We will continue to work for a free Palestinian state that's at peace with Israel," he said. While Bush has backed the idea of a Palestinian state as part of a peace deal, he has tried to shut Arafat out of the Middle East picture.

Both Washington and Israel accuse Arafat of fomenting violence against Israel, a charge he denies. The Palestinians want Gaza and the West Bank -- territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war -- for a state.

Arafat's condition has also stirred speculation about where he could be buried if he died. Israeli and Palestinian political sources have said Arafat would probably be laid to rest in the Gaza Strip because Israel refuses the Palestinian president a grave in Jerusalem.

Throughout Thursday, Palestinian officials issued conflicting reports and at one point Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker announced Arafat had died. He later retracted his statement.

Doctors carrying out tests on Arafat since he was airlifted to France last Friday have ruled out leukemia, but still did not know what was wrong with him, aides said. He was transferred to the intensive care unit on Wednesday.

"He has no immunity whatsoever," one aide said, adding Arafat had slipped into the coma around 2 a.m. (2000 EST) on Thursday. Arafat, short, stubble-bearded and usually seen in his trademark black-and-white Arab headdress, was rushed to France last Friday suffering from severe stomach pains, diarrhea and vomiting.

Until he was airlifted to France, Arafat had been effectively confined to his shell-shattered Ramallah headquarters by Israeli forces for 2-1/2 years.

The only thing our Prime Minister has said in the last two years that i have agreed with is that Arafat will not be buried in Jerusalem.

Let him be buried either in his country of birth (Egypt) or in Khan Yunis where the Arafat clan have a family plot.

Let him, or his representatives, make a clear arguement why he should be buried in Jerusalem because as far as i can see his only reason in wanting to be buried in Jerusalem is to continue the fight which he has done nothing in his life to end.

As for desecrating his grave, i might not like the man or what he stands for, but no one deserves having their grave desecrated, and anyhow, in the bitter history of this conflict its only one side that repeatedly desecrates graves and holy sights.

You're wrong about jews and palestinians being the plague of our world. The plague of our world is ALL people who bastardise religion in the name of their own personal agendas, be they Arab, Jew or Christian. True believers of these three religions DONT go round killing innocent men, women and children in the name of said religion.

Thanks for the offer of Antartica, but i generally believe that there is enough space in this region for both Jews and Arabs to live in harmonay, and when Arafat dies, hopefully we can start to build a brighter future for ALL our children.

The virtues of Christianity and Islam are fine for the most part...that isnt the problem...its their metaphysical assumptions...

look at St. Augustine's Great Chain of Being...you have God on top, then the angels, then man, then woman, then nature...man is not part of nature
              same as in Genesis

where do think the scientific method came from a la francis bacon...the entire beginning of the enlightenment was about finding a reasonable proof for God's existence...lame

its about utilizing nature, not seeing yourself as part of it...its about putting all ultimate responsibility on God, not our species...heaven cant be here, but after your dead...the soul is the measure of your worth in God's eyes...and on a moral level...it is your intentions that matter, not the consequence

the idea that you cheat your senses, which tell you throught the world of appearance that the world is constantly changing (Nietzsche), you create an absolutist panacea...a lie..a way to come to terms with your mortality, with entropy

christianities ultimate failure is by being a catalyst for the onslaught that is capitalism a la calvanism...the visible signs...being that if you control and hoarde more natural resources, have more possessions, it might be a symbol of God's blessings..and you may be more likely to go to heaven...hence the puritanical, excessively indivualized reality of capitalism

monotheistic religions suck...that included christianity and islam...they are responsible for the deaths of millions upon millions of people and ultimately the cause of the contiued disparriagment between rich and poor...

the basic virtues of these religions are fine to some degree...its the metaphysical structure, the arrogance, the concept of original sin, and the inconsistencies with what our senses tell us and now some of the most basic fundamental principles that cosmic and quantum theory can show us

please get rid of these evil paradigms..the world be much much better

asdf i do not agree with Kerry's catholicism...but even if he was an atheist...he'd still be living a Christian life because he is a capitalist

my point is that Kerry is a conservative ultimately...but he is less of a pompous asshole than Bush...as I said in the other posts...Kerry has about two or three good things going for him that I like

                      1) He has a somewhat skeptical nature (wishy washy = good - in this day and age)
                      2) He admited Vietnam was genocide, which it was...I believe about 40 k us soldiers died vs. 2-5 million vietnemese
                      3) He said he wanted to dismantle us nuclear ploriferation before asking other countries to

he also does seem more intelligent than Bush and in the light of all of what Bush has done, he does seem to be more special than he really is

but he is obviously the lesser of two evils...and that is why i voted for him

out of the candidates that had a feasable chance of winning, he was the best choice

so he was going to be my LEADER, but he wasnt perfect...i dont know how many times i need to clarify that to you asdf...im not confused...

it is unfortunate that an agnostic or atheist cannot be president in this country...this is no democracy...there is no room for philosophy or science in politics in this country at the moment...sadly
