        Yeah I work with people who are so stupid they cant see whats going on. For the last 6 months we have been building cars flat out and parking them in fields around the country. The company had to halt production for 2 months to update the plant for future models anyway. If things where bad financualy they would of cut production right back like all the other Car Manufacturers but they haven't. Many people I work with cant go for 2 months without getting paid. I've told them they would be better off getting a credit card or a bank loan, but they cant see it. The company is acting as a Loan Shark. We will pay it back by working excessive overtime for years and the debt will never be paid off. The company will be given carte blanche to lay us off or make us work whenever they want if we agree. But most of my colleagues just cant see it. Me and the Union reps are really scared we will lose the vote. They will put workers rights back 25 years.

          jesus, I feel terribly sorry for people facing this situation.. I dont know what I would do if I were forced to miss work for an extended period in this economy.. bartending maybe or telemarketing, something thats always hiring i guess, but still, scary shit..

          I cant really stand my job, but I am thankful every day for it, and being in the telecommunications industry and my position in engineering even if the company went under or had to be sold I would still have at least 18 months of work to do to dismantle our network.. the cable phone and internet industry are the closest to being recession proof as you can get really.. people will ALWAYS find the money to pay for at least one or two of those things

            I work in IT for a local hospital and there have already been 100+ layoffs in our organization this year. Two other hospitals here have cut 600 jobs this week combined. Heading into this recession I was thinking an industry like healthcare would be safe, but it goes to show that anything can happen at this point. It will definitely be interesting to see what happens in the coming year.

              Re: The Official Layoff Thread!!!

              5 people got laid off from my work this month, which in a company of 25 is a serious percentage. Not cool at all...the music industry was struggling as it was with other indie labels and distributors going under pretty much weekly. Now the recession's in full swing it's going to be even tougher

              I'm pretty safe as I work in online which is one of the few areas of the market which is actually growing, but it's still not a great marketplace at the moment. Music is one of the first things people stop spending money on when times are hard, espcecially when it's so readily available for 'free'.

                It's a sorry thread, sorry to hear this happening to so many people... I know it is easier said than done, but the ones that got laid off should hang on and be strong in such moments....try to fight in this jungle and find another job quickly before moral depression hits!

                Really sorry to read all this, and it's a worldwide disaster;

                My hubby works as a consultant for an American multinational firm, and luckily where I live the economic crisis hasn't hit us (yet) the way it hit the rest of the world...but the fear is there.

                  Sad state of affairs chunky - UK Banking isn't much brighter .. no job losses yet, but the secure job I thought I'd see through to an early retirement and comfortable pension may be turned on its head. Should economy matters go on for a few years and deteriorate further then things could become scary.

                    I work in Insurance which has been hit big time as we insure a lot of construction companies and guess what nobody's building anymore.

                    Have been assured jobs safe though at least for time being.

                          I'm pretty lucky. I work in accounts and I'm studying for my accountancy qualification. My employers are a social landlord, funded by the government - and people always need social housing. I'm busy every day of the week, whatever the economy is like.

                          It does get depressing though - yesterday I saw a new tenancy form for an 18 year old single girl with a baby - we had just given her a 2 bed property - her rent will be paid by the council and she doesnt work. I can't help thinking whats the point? I should just get my gf pregnant and let the state pay....

                              the fun thing about being in the group that tracks and runs finance for my organization is that I get to see and work with all of the layoffs, cuts, etc. I'm neck deep in that shit. I get to do the analysis and develop the very savings templates that will be used for me in the next round of layoffs.

                              just got home at 9 pm tonight from finishing up the last round... there will be another one in January, I bet, so I'll get to do this fun little exercise all over again!

                              If I'm lucky.

                                Sorry you are going through this and sorry to hear that some people have been effected.

                                Working in the automotive industry myself right now I am aware of the uneasiness surrounding me every day. My dealership so far hasn't been effected all that much and people are still buying every week, which is a relief....although I know 2009 is bringing with it a lot of uncertainty
