It was going to happen shoener or later.....

GWB's Iraq legacy summed up nicely by one very brave Iraqi journalist.

Just wish it was a grenade.
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”

It may be a story and actually somewhat funny and I give the President props for dodging the moron who threw the shoe. I didn't know Odd Job from the James Bond movie was now a journalist.

Btw, the grenade comment was over the line. Many Americans don't like him either, but wishing he was killed is another thing.

Dead was maybe a little over the top.

How about a perminant injury with constant pain?

I'm sure we can all live with that

Tell you what, Bush looked genuinely amused by the guy throwing the shoe at him, even while it was happening. Also, he's pretty spry for an older guy. There are a lot of politicians his age that would have taken that right in the kisser.

He looked more like he was playing that Wii Fit soccer-ball-heading game than anything else.

Re: It was going to happen shoener or later.....

Having had a little bit of time to digest this, a few serious thoughts:

                  1. Shouldn't there have been a secret service guy jumping in front of that shoe or something? They are trained to take a bullet for the president, but some guy's Rockports is too much to ask? If that were something more serious than a shoe, that could have really been tragic.

                  2. What should happen to this guy? On the one hand, it's more a statement of his disgust and disrespect, which is a hallmark of a free society, than an actual attempt to harm Bush or Maliki. On the other hand, you can't just go around launching footwear at world leaders and expect to get away with it. Also, he's evidently being held because the shoe was being thrown in the general direction of Maliki, not because he threw it at Bush, which is a little silly IMO.

                  3. Not to belabor the point, but that guy threw that thing hard from point-blank range and Bush avoided it like he was Neo from the Matrix. Hell, the second time, he barely bothered to duck and looked completely non-plussed. I would have expected him to hit the deck, but instead he was staring him down like, "What else you got?" Bush may be a lot of horrible things, but credit where credit is due, he's a nimble mother fucker.

Seeing as everyone is pissed at Bush... what if every time Bush gets out in public for the next few weeks someone in the crowd lobs a shoe or two at him? Would be an interesting "goodbye" gesture from the world...

imo respect is earned not given. If Americans are so pissed at Bush for trying to "liberate" (what a joke) Iraq, imagine what the Iraqi's feel about so much more that they have lost in this war. So in all due respect to Bush, that shoe was well (mis)planted.

Add to the misery that is our VP who other than nearly killing someone after a few beers, has almost never made it in the news for anything spectacular. Other than filing taxes nearing 10 million and going on drunken duck hunts, Cheney hasn't done shit. I can't recollect the last time he flew overseas or even made an international visit and he's the Vice President of the US for chrissake's. Even Condoleeza Rice is traveling more (dont know if she's back but she's in India/Pak region trying to pressure Pakistan to start rounding up the goons)

Forget the shoe, he should've launched his camera. Bush deserves it. (It's pretty clear why 12,000 people suggested a sewage/trash treatment plant in San Francisco be named George W. Bush)

So I'm not misunderstood, I think that Bush, Cheney, and whole lot of them has earned a shoe to the face, a swift kick in the balls and pretty much anything else you can think of to do to them. Even if you give Bush the benefit of the doubt as to his motives, he is still responsible for the worst foreign policy blunder in our nation's history, a mistake that set into motion a chain of events that led to the death of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. Worse still, as far as I can tell, he still has not come to appreciate the gravity of his actions. People all over the world should be mad as hell at him.

The problem, though, is that notwithstanding his ample justification and the fact that the throwing of a shoe is largely a symbolic act designed to show strong contempt, had it hit Bush in the face, it could have led to some significant physical harm. Even though I agree that Bush might deserve it, particularly coming from an Iraqi, I'm mostly just saying that we shouldn't set a precedent where we decide that acts of physical violence, regardless of degree, are acceptable as to world leaders. Otherwise, you get into this absurd sliding scale analysis where you have to decide what level of violence is appropriate as to each leader under the circumstances. There are things that we can all agree would be inappropriate to throw, like a grenade, but what if he threw a baseball? A 2x4? Was his shoe hard-soled or soft-soled? Nerf football? Banana cream pie? Was the pie in a aluminum tin, or a ceramic dish? It just gets ridiculous, and the better practice is just to have a bright line rule that throwing shit at world leaders is verboten. Pick another way to show your contempt.
