BTW, Chris. What is that camera and lens. I'm thinking about a DSLR for taking better photos of my paintings along with other stuff.

I shoot with a Canon 40D and a varity of lens, but 24-70L is my most used.

You could have a great start with a starter body like the Canon Rebel Xti,Xsi and a 50mm prime (non zoom) lens.
a GREAT inexpensive 50mm prime lens is:

that should be sharp enough to take great photos of paintings in any light.
the lens is a 1.8 so you can get massive cool depth of field.

its a super super budget setup.
