When people start wanting more, something different to listen to ??? what is going to happen? It would be a terrible thing for us the "vanguardist" in music ( and i'm incluiding all dj's and producers of edm) to just remain out of all the advances that technology is bringing to the world.

I take pride to be part of a scene that clearly influences all other music genres in the rest of the world because of the sound , the way to perform music , and last but not least T E C H N O L O G Y .

I rejoice myself in the fact that software is bringing the performance of a dj closer to perfection , that the dj is finally doing what he always wanted to... what he dreamed of... what he always pictured in his mind that some day it would happen, but that he wasnt capable of doing it because... he only had 2 hands.
Mate, let's get one thing very clear. I am not a Luddite, and I have nothing against software. I'm sure I will be esctatic when one day I can stir my dick in a Digweed vortex with a Fleshlight running Reason and Ableton Live.

There is a fundamental difference in the idea of 'mixing' when we discuss it. Mixing to me involves beat matching, programming, loops, EVERYTHING a DJ does to create a set. Mixing to you seems to only involve programming and the miscellaneous excess.

Can you actually claim using the laptop does not ease the labor and lessen the load on your mind so you can have the time and space to fuck around with other shit?

We are not denying the creative use/expression that laptops allow. I acknowledge all that. We agree that, in the head space, laptops allow you to plan, think, and imagine what you can do with your tracks and set. I am all for moving with the times and moving forward.

This discussion has nothing to do with embracing technology and breaking through into the ultimate man-machine meld that will realise every DJ's wet dream. We are talking about the mastery of a skill.

If you had a pair of decks, and all the efx boxes and equipment (theoretically, for the purpose of this) to mimic everything you can do on your software, are you capable of pulling that long transition to hold your set together so you can garnish it?

If I saw you do all that on decks, I'd think you're brilliant. But if you did it on a laptop, I would applaud you for your programming. I'd still love the set, I'll still dance my ass off, but pardon me for not exploding into an orgiastic second coming.

I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.

      lol ...

For me this matter is clear. I only ask myself, what would be the equivalent of that effort with vynils in software?

Re: Carl Craig is a fucking ...

i suppose the same thing happened when composers were writing their songs in a piece of paper and were adding notes on the stave, so musical instruments like guitar, piano, violin and whatever else would play them and then someone came to change this with the first computers , and the first dance tracks which were composed through a machine!! there were a lot of haters and still are who dont understand that this is actually music which is not made FROM computers but WITH computers!

imo as long as you know how to use the computer and you dont just use it for beatmatching then its ok! it can give you things and fx and loops that you couldnt even imagine you can have when using only two decks or cdjs and can make your set fly to the sky! thats if you know how to use it!

        for me this is acceptable:

Re: Carl Craig is a fucking ...

I´d love to see some people picking up Ableton or Traktor for the 1st time and getting to lock beats perfectly in 5 minutes.

Seriously, I see the point of the pro-vinyl guys and respect the purity they desire. What I can´t give any respect or consideration for, is ignorance about how these things actually work.

You´re just telling me that the time and effort I put every day into getting to know the tracks I buy and prepare them for live playing is worthless.

I don´t see how learning how to read the grooves carved in a vinyl record has any less merit than learning how to read a waveform on a screen.

Well, I guess I won´t change anyone´s mind and no one´s gonna change mine, but at least inform yourself, recognize and give some respect to the work involved in using software, whether you appreciate it more or less than traditional DJ´ing.

^^ I don't think anyone is doing that . As feather said it's just a different set of skills and some appreciate one while others appreciate the other. Everyone is allowed their own opinion about this.. It always astounds me when people get so nasty about it. You all have a choice to do what you want. As someone who loves to dance I love the physical side of watching a Dj mix rather than someone hunched over a computer.

For me , if I like the music I don't care what is making it. If it's a Dj playing in a club I want more than I get from a cd playing at home. If a DJ can give more using a computer that's great. Unfortunately in my experience this has not been the case up to date. Djs I see with computers tend to be absorbed in the computer, and some to such an extent that their music is undanceable. As in all things, some are a lot better at it than others. This will probably get better as their grip on technology improves.

Up to date the very best I have seen did not use computers, if this changes I will be very happy to go along with it! Ultimately I want to have a good time sharing my love of music and dancing and I would also like the Dj to share with us .

Interesting, I am willing to bet I was into electronic music well before some of the young whippersnappers so vehemently defending technology here were.
