Banging pots and pans at New years Eve

Does anyone engage in this ritual at New Years?

Or know where its origins are?

Quick googling would suggest either a Phillipinno origin or from the southern states of the US.

    any info?

oh yeah! such a fun little tradition of celebration. got way to hammered at party to even think about doing it this year tho =(

as far as origins go, i have no idea. the first time i was exposed to it was when i was really young, and when i used to live in washington state. it used to be a great substitute if you didn't have fireworks!

idunno, i guess it's just a simple, legal and fun way to make some lound n' absurd clanging that pisses off the neighbors! =)

Me and a friend banged on pots and pans for new years eve when we were kids...They are Italian...I always thought is was just because his family was poor and wanted to keep us occupied while they got drunk.

The only time I've ever done it was also when I was a kid in Washington State (Spokane). Hadn't thought about it since then, and haven't seen it done here in the midwest...

Yep. Yet another thing I have to chalk up to "seemed like a good idea at the time."
