    Cielo: January 2009 News

After excesses of the holiday festivities and the New Year hedonism you may be in need of some therapy, if not a good detox! Therapy we can help you with kicks off 2009 at Cielo with guests Jojo Flores and Halo Varga. Jojo has come a long way from his original Montreal residencies in the ‘80s. Now reaching global audiences every week and multiple residencies at famed clubs in a handful of states including Los Angeles, Chicago, Hawaii and NYC, at our very own Cielo. NYC’s Underground Archives voted him Best International DJ 4-years running, so he’s no slouch! Musically he wants “to put the message out there, being optimistic in a chaotic world where positive times are hard to come by,” so expect a great deal of soul in his music. Chi-Town’s Halo Varga, who’s been behind the decks since he was 12, even though he wasn’t old enough to get into the clubs, pairs with him on the night. When Halo grew up he worked at Moody Records, where, with friend Hipp-e, they created H-Foundation and released a string of acclaimed singles.

Francois K’s applauded Deep Space returns on Monday 5th with the dub-techno-rock-jazz-afro-psychedelic sounds of the Beat Pharmacy’s Brendon Moeller on deck duty. The New York-based South African has been creating quality dance music for over a decade with releases on Third Ear, Leena Music, Eskimo and Francois’ own Deep Space Media. Musically Moeller adheres to the “anything goes” ethos, fusing together the down low with the best in acoustic melodies and eerie soundscapes from a pot-pourri of artists, genres and eras. Expect an effervescent mix of the finest music around.

Norwegian DJ Mikkas and Denmark's Lars B are the Djuma Soundsystem who add a smorgasbord of Scandinavian sounds to Cielo's hallowed space on Thursday, January 8th. Cielo welcomes Djuma Soundsystem on the first stop of their globe-trekking world tour. Masters at solidly constructed DJ sets that always leaving you wanting for more, their über cool electronica paints multi-colored soundscapes crafted from dreamy orchestration and near chilled neo-techno melodies. It's a riveting combination that also takes in Middle-Eastern influences, percolating beats, synth-driven basslines, tripped-out vocals and of course incessant grooves. Djuma Soundsystem ploughs their eccentric furrow with considerable style. Well known for the highest-selling EP ever on Beatport (Les Djins), with remixes by legendary Trentemoller, Djuma Soundsystem continually release impressive tracks on Toolroom and Get Physical.

Last July Sebastien Léger headlined for Made Event and delivered such an amazing set that left you asking for more, that we just had to invite him back. The Frenchman is in town on Friday 9th to underscore why he’s been one of the leading exponents in the Gallic house revolution for the best part of a decade. Léger is a master at knowing that in dance music terms less-is-almost-always-more, opting when producing and programming for the minimalist house demeanor in juxtapose to filtered disco loops and synth hooks that leave tons of room for the hi-octane frenzy to ensue. Magnifique!

Dessous on Friday 16th presents Cielo resident Willie Graff alongside Dutch producer DJ Vincenzo. A leading light in the Dutch house scene, Vincent Kriek, has been producing house with techno and progressive qualities for close to a decade, collaborating along the way with Jamez and Laidback Luke. Little wonder with close to a 100 releases to his name his music has been embraced by an array of A-list DJs that include Armin, Judge Jules, Deep Dish, Paul Van Dyk and Ferry Corsten.

We’re joined by the equivalent of musical royalty on Sunday 18th as Giantstep presents the heavyweight pairing of Norman Jay and DJ Spinna. We could write reams about Norman Jay, awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2002 for services to music, stalwart of the Notting Hill Carnival and instrumental in the rise of club music in the UK. The innovative and pioneering London-born DJ first came to prominence playing warehouse parties in the early-‘80s, before helping to launch Kiss FM in the capitol and joining Gilles Peterson run the groundbreaking Talkin’ Loud label. DJ Spinna is no slouch either! Of Caribbean origin, although raised in New York, he’s a master at combining dance music with hip-hop, funk, and soul. Little wonder then he’s remixed a plethora of major artists including De La Soul, Mary J. Blige and Stevie Wonder. Around the time he was a member of the underground hip-hop super-group Polyrhythm Addicts (alongside Apani B, Mr. Complex, and Shabaam Sahdeeq) he even collaborated on early Eminem releases. Not to be missed.

The international guests come think and fast in January, and from Belgium (although he now resides in Orlando) the Made Event welcomes Jimmy Van M on Thursday, 22nd. The talented progressive house protagonist has cemented himself as one of the best DJs for starting the night off, which date back to his days as a Twilo resident. It was here that Jimmy teamed up with Sasha & Digweed to bring a new style of clubbing to the masses; and went on to record for the Digger’s Bedrock label too. As brilliant of a warm-up DJ as he is, Jimmy still knows how to deliver peak-time slots in the biggest clubs around the world, and has since been the mastermind behind cutting-edge releases on Ultra (“Trance Nation America”) and the “Balance” series for EQ.

On Friday 23rd we host from Germany Blkmarket presenting a Perlong label night featuring Sammy Dee. Both Sammy and Perlong are Berlin-based so it was only a matter of time before the two hooked-up. The venerated “Purplehummer” was the resultant from the man that’s built a reputation for himself as an innovator of eclectic, off-kilter electronica sounds. With a music career spanning nearly two decades, Sammy hosted residencies at such clubs as Tresor and Ostgut in his hometown -the latter made Ostgut’s Panorama Bar acclaimed as “arguably, one of the most consistently successful club nights in Europe.”

It’s party time on the Saturday 24th as Cielo celebrates its 6th Anniversary with residents Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff joined for a live show from the dynamic Ms Barbara Tucker. Hailing from Brooklyn, Barbara has graced more clubbing anthems then we could list here, suffice to say the ones that we all have in our collection include “Deep Inside”, “Beautiful People”, “I Get Lifted”, “Stay Together”, “Everybody Dance (The Horn Song)”, “Stop Playing With My Mind” and most recently “Most Precious Love”. A talented singer, songwriter, and even actress and choreographer, she’s worked with everyone from George Clinton through to Deee-Lite and Masters At Work, and certainly knows how to entertain as you’ll bear witness.

We round off our preview of the top night in January on Thursday 29th with Dance.Here.Now hosting house don Victor Calderone. His remixing résumé is extensive including hits for Beyoncé, Madonna, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson, while his own productions have faired just as well twice hitting the apex of the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart. His sets have been described as “deep driving grooves, brisk tribal percussion, sexually charged basslines and provocative vocals.” In other words it’s a tribal house fan’s dream: hot, steamy, sexy and created with the sole purpose of making you dance.
