    Does HDMI do Closed Captioning?

I am using my new comcast HD DVR connected to a brand spankin new panasonic 50" plasma, so these components are new. I am hearing yes/no on HDMI not being able to carry closed captioning signals.

Does anyone know for sure if closed captioning works so that I can turn it on for TV programs, my DVD player decodes subtitles just fine via it's HDMI connection, I'm just wondering if this is possible with the cable box.

Im using a Brighthouse HD-DVR (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD) with HDMI connection and it works for me.

I have to use the closed caption option from the Cable box and not the TV.

Hum. I will have to check, but I am sure my comcast dvr remote doesnt have any type of closed caption button on it from what i remember.

also i am running my dvr -> yamaha receiver -> tv i wonder if this is doing anything. i should try and plug the dvr directly into the tv via hdmi and see what happens.

Re: Does HDMI do Closed Captioning?

There is no specific button for it on my remote (the DVR) either it has a settings button which will bring up the settings menu and somewhere buried in there is a closed caption setting to turn CC on and off and also select which CC type you want and language.

If you were to use an over the air HD antenna you could use the TV's CC feature. However, since you are receiving your video signal from the cable company the CC signal is encrypted in the signal so the cable box has to decrypt the signal, which is why you have to turn on the CC feature through the cable DVR. Hope that makes sense.

The video signal should just be a straight throughput through your receiver to your TV. Receivers don’t usually do any video processing so running the signal like you mentioned should not have an effect on CC.

BTW, HDMI in some instances can implement copy protection preventing you from recording to another device like a VCR DVD recorder etc, if the cable company or Movie studio invokes the copy protection signal. I haven’t seen that personally happen yet, but heard the option exists.

Hey thanks alot for the info. I looked around my DVR menu and found a settings section but nothing related to captioning which is kind of dumb.

I googled and found this, this worked:

for some reason this setting is buried on some type of low level menu when the dvr is off you have to set it...this worked. i would have never have found this if i didnt see the hint above...thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
