This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

                  GU019 Release Party

GU019 was really the last GU release to have a big name on it and still feel really underground. Which release after GU019 really holds the Global Underground name in tact? Can you name one?

In addition, the CD wasn't half as good as the GU019 release party at Twilo. It was about this time a whopping 8 years ago (Feb 2001). Digweed dropped just enough tracks off the album to call it a release party but the beginning of the set was incredibly dark and tribal. When he played Madam's "Penetration" the breakdown was harrowing on the Phazon. Then, around 5am things went oscillating with some magical progressive trance. No better place to be than in the middle of the dancefloor at Twilo with Digweed peaking out his and Sasha fucked off his ass in the booth. Ask Kamal. He was there with me. For those that want an abstract review, here it is below.

John Digweed @ Twilo [February 23][New York, NY]

I am confused and I don't know where I am. It's really hot. I can feel the sweat pouring onto my brow as I stand by myself in a vacated, dusty lot. There are sparse patches of grass growing out and around the rocks and dirt. To my left I can see a broken, run-down delivery truck. It looks like it has been dead for years. The windshield is broken and it doesn't have its tires anymore. They were probably stripped off long ago. But, older than the truck is what I can see in front of me. There's an enormous, decrepit factory. The rusty doors, numerous broken windows and fallen columns tell me that it too is out of commission. I walk forward and enter the building.

Inside, it is immediately apparent that this is a dilapidated steel factory. And then, I hear a deep voice all around me. "Mr. Ryley, please report to level five". With that, my heart starts to race and I am immediately frightened. Next, I hear the sound of molten steal being cooled. I can almost see the vapor rising. A motionless conveyer belt echoes its shuffling riff. Then, a forging hammer drives down with amazing force. It's an eerie explosion that resonates throughout my entire chest. My palms become sweaty as I hear some water drip from above into a large pool. I can feel the ripples dissipate. Then there's the sound of steel being cut. The sound is precise, as if a laser was cutting the air around me. A large crane barks at me as it lifts the heavy steel upwards to the rafters. The voice comes back. "Mr. Ryley, please report to level five". The hammer drives down once again and the conveyer belt repeats its riff. Water drips from above. The crane roars once again. Lasers, I can hear steel being pulverized. The conveyor belt. Everything is moving. "Mr. Ryley, please report to level five". The hammer, the laser, the hammer, the laser, the converyor belt, the crane, dripping water, the hammer, the laser. The sounds encroach upon me at lightning speed until I am immersed in a sea of invisible energy. It's pure chaos and I am raptured. Suddenly, I open my eyes and come to my senses. I know where I am. I am in Twilo and it's the last Friday of the month.

And there we were to see John Digweed spin his second elongated set for the second straight month. After last month's deep, dark, and purely amazing performance we were all ready to go the distance again. But this month had a nice twist. Celebrating the February 27th release of his newest Global Underground mix (GU019 - Los Angeles), Digweed made the night a release party not to be forgotten.

Arriving to Twilo around 0300, Digweed took the controls from a banging Sean Cusick around 0330. I have to say that Sean Cusick's set was the best set I've ever heard from him at Twilo prior to Sasha or Digweed taking the decks. Mr. Cusick is a little bird in a little cage. Soon enough he'll have to fly away and become big bird in a big cage because he was simply brilliant. The atmosphere was perfect and the folks were ready to bounce. So, let's get back to Mr. Digweed.

Digweed's set started deep but not as deep and eerie as his set last month. This time I felt as if the journey wasn't going to be as hard to reach cloud 9. We were all jovially bumping and grooving right up until about 0600 when he dropped his first notable track off of his Los Angeles release, Satoshi Tomiie's "Love In Traffic", a hard pounding progressive track with a beautiful vocal layered on the top. The track opened a lot of eyes and for the first three and a half hours or so Digweed filled Twilo with all kinds of tracks off of GU019 as well as some other notables. If I am not mistaken, I heard Jimmy Van M's "Sanctuary", Cevin Fisher's "Music Saved My Life", Moby's "Southside", Fatboy Slim's "Star 69", Pole Folder & CP's "Apollo Vibes", Tijuana's "Groove Is In The Air", Madam's "Penetration", and Dirty Harry's "Musica". Around 0700, he laid down a track that made me look at the DJ booth twice to make sure Sasha wasn't up there spinning. Maybe it was a new Sasha track or maybe it was Digweed shifting the music but everyone got that Sasha feeling.

From around 0700 until 0900 it was total mayhem. Digweed was laying down chaotic progressive trance and everyone was swimming. I could hear the conveyor belt. I could hear the forging hammer. I could hear the laser. I could hear the page for Mr. Ryley. Every sound was penetrating me. But, the culmination of these two hours has to be Pete Heller presents Stylus Trouble's "Sputnik". "Sputnik" is not an amazing track but if you were there at Twilo last Friday, you would know that never before did a track reflect Digweed's personality. From the beginning, "Sputnik" builds and builds until it reaches its peak, where individual melodies disappear and the music is simply screaming. The build up is amazing and everyone knows it's going to hit hard, including Digweed. So, when the peak did come, Digweed didn't flail his arms. Digweed didn't bounce. Digweed just paused the music for a slight moment, glanced peacefully at the hundreds of bouncers going ecstatic on the dancefloor and let "Sputnik" slam down with a vengeance. Nobody can create such chaos and retain the tranquillity that Digweed does. No one.

And so, around 1000, the night ended but not before two encores. I am not quite sure what the first track was but his last track was the John Creamer and Stephane K mix of Kosheen's "Hide U". Having played this track the last few times he's been to Twilo, the devoted easily remembered the lyrics and sang blissfully while at the same time reminiscing a wonderful night.

Right folks. Managed to blag the long boxed version of this off my mate. Though when he gave me this, it was only the two cd cases with cds. He threw the box and booklet out (i know). I'm asking any [ms] members too help me out with the box and booklet. Random question i know, but would really appreciate any help. Cheers.

All the long boxes are on eBay at the moment, but some of the prices are a bit steep,
