Cocaine blamed for sniffer dog death

Cocaine blamed for sniffer dog death

A crime-fighting sniffer dog who helped put scores of drug offenders behind bars has died of nasal cancer which may have been caused by his police work.

Heroic springer spaniel Max is believed to be Britain's first known victim of canine cocaine-induced cancer. Seven years of sniffing out class A drugs contributed to his death, his vet and police handler fear.

'It is ironic that the wonderful organ that made him successful in his work has been his demise,' said Insp Anne Higgins. 'Up until a couple of weeks ago he seemed fine and was doing really well but it was an aggressive tumour. 'I took him into the station, which he usually loved and it was his favourite place but that day he did not show any reaction to being there and we knew then he was not right. He was a fighter until the end and always very dignified.'

Max was put down at Tiverton police station, in Devon, on Sunday. 'It was very hard but we had to do it,' said Insp Higgins. Kate Fairclough, who was Max's vet since 2006, said: 'Sniffing drugs could well have been a factor – I certainly cannot rule it out.
'Nose cancer in dogs is not all that common only about one to two per cent of all cancers in dogs affect the nose. He was a lovely dog.'

Max was forced to retire from Avon and Somerset Police last November after suffering a hip complaint. But his running days were far from over after he was fitted with a chariot-style set of wheels to get around on.

"I blame the dealers who gave him the coke, they don't care how many lives they destroy."

Dogs were not meant to sniff drugs all day. People (cops) are taking advantage of dogs.

People were not meant to work all day in cubicles. People (employers) are taking advantage of us.

It's clear that the dog was the owners best friend...

We take advantage.. of? what, their miraculous sense of smell and companionship. When its time to go to work and bust some badguys, or if its time to play ball. It's one and the same to them.

I seriously doubt the dog was actually doing coke.

That's bullshit. Wouldn't the police have had to train the dog with coke before they could bring him out to sniff that shit out? You're hardly gonna pick up a coke-addicted dog off the streets. It's the police who did this to the dog.

umm, hey guys.. that comment is satire.

That is not how the dogs are trained to recongnize drugs.
Read up on that before making any more crazy posts, ok?

K-9 cops can sniff out drugs, bombs and suspects that would leave human cops ransacking entire cities. Plus, a good teeth-baring snarl can stop a suspect in his tracks. Learn all about the K-9 police force.

                    Drug Training

People often wonder if dogs sniff out hidden drugs because they want to eat them, or because they're addicted to drugs themselves. In fact, the dogs have absolutely no interest in drugs. What they're actually looking for is their favorite toy. Their training has led them to associate that toy with the smell of drugs.

Breston uncovered a shipment of marijuana in heat-sealed Mylar bags, inside plastic-lined crates sealed with foam sealant, inside a closed storage garage.

The toy used most often is a white towel. Police dogs love to play a vigorous game of tug-of-war with their favorite towel. To begin the training, the handler simply plays with the dog and the towel, which has been carefully washed so that it has no scent of its own. Later, a bag of marijuana is rolled up inside the towel. After playing for a while, the dog starts to recognize the smell of marijuana as the smell of his favorite toy. The handler then hides the towel, with the drugs, in various places. Whenever the dog sniffs out the drugs, he digs and scratches, trying to get at his toy. He soon comes to learn that if he sniffs out the smell of drugs, as soon as he finds them he'll be rewarded with a game of tug-of-war

Reminds me of that Family Guy episode where Brian gets hooked. Classic.

                          Sad for the dog though
