    Re: Vegetarian Alliance

I'm terribly sorry if this discussion might hurt the sensitivity of some persons in this forum , this thread was intended just to know which people that post here on MS are vegetarians and to share their experiences .

But I also believe that we are on an era of knowledge and collective consciousness where we have easy access to information and is our duty as human evolving beings to be conscious of our actions and what we can generate or degenarate onto our future generations,

As I sad before the main reason why I became Vegetarian was due to moral reasons

I encourage everybody here on MS to watch this video which pretty much sums up what I believe ,it is probably one of the most amazing documentaries I have seen in a while , it is a strong shocking video but very revealing .

      Re: Vegetarian Alliance

i was a vegan from 13 to 21. my thyroid broke after a 2 week trip thru france with nothing but white bread, salad greens, and fruits... and was urged to eat dairy and fish when i came back.

took me a few years to get the fish in my system so continued being a veggie who ate bits of dairy until 25. started losing weight was constantly hungry. would become very lightheaded and all sorts. go back to docs urged to eat fish because of my thyroid again.

started eating fish and felt better. i don't like hurting animals and i don't like eating them, but at the same time my body isn't made for it i guess.

i have been very well educated in the foods and how i should eat and what i should eat when but my body was just not made for it i guess. my only problem with being a vegan when i was was how expensive it is. i love how natalie portman gets on her high horse about how easy it is to be a vegan and people should follow her but its easy for her she's rich, probably has a chef, etc.

yup and that's the problem for the most part imo right there. There's a monopoly on organic, vegan foods which allows these grocers to jack up prices on the foods. Whole Foods market turns into Whole Paycheck market.

Btw There are tons of diseases that are idiopathic and recent studies are pointing towards the consumption of meat .

Lol nah man. That is incorrect. We do have enzymes that break down meat and they do a good job of it. Pepsin in the stomach. Carboxypeptidase and many other specialized protein enzymes in the duodenum. The awkward part that you didn't mention is why we can't break down cellulose from certain vegetables/plants.

Furthermore, you miss out on the fact that we do have canines which are used for tearing.

I find I can afford organic if I plan the food I am going to eat and only buy exactly what I need . I may buy one tomato at a time. What makes food expensive is what you throw out. Obviously NO pre packaged supermarket fruit and veg. !!!

                yea defo agree.

its pretty hard to not eat prepackaged goods as a vegan/ hardveggie. bulger, tempeh, and staple things can be expensive and very hard to make, so most opt to buy premade tempeh which is just about as much as a steak in some places. (replaces meat products)

bying organic is different to buying vegetarian/ vegan foods, though most of these are organic obv... just think we get our prices hiked up.

i go to the grocery store daily cus i like mega fresh food.

I am so addicted to meat it actually makes me crabby if I go more than 48 hours without it. I'm not really addicted to a type of meat as much as just making sure I've eaten some over a 2 day period.

That and a couple of glasses of red wine everyday.

Life for me would come to an end without these.

                        Re: Vegetarian Alliance

I received my first delivery of organic fruits & veggies yesterday...the first thing I noticed was how small everything was as well as how unpolished everything looked. My second observation was how much better each individual item tastes. Some of the fruits and veggies I had never purchased organic in the past, amazing difference.

Frankly I did not begin ordering for the following reasons, I just appreciate the convenience of having staple items delivered to my door so I can focus on other things besides my appetite and keep eating out to a minimum. And of course the taste is superior.

But, here are the reasons this company thinks eating organic is important. I do think some of these points are worth keeping in mind:

Why We Should Eat Organic Food

                        Protect Future Generations

Children receive four times the exposure than an adult to at least eight widely used cancer-causing pesticides in food. The food choice you make now will impact your child's health in the future.

                        Prevent Soil Erosion

The Soil Conservation Service estimates that more than three billion tons of topsoil are eroded from United States croplands each year, seven times faster than it can accumulate naturally. Soil is the foundation of the food chain in organic farming, but in conventional farming, the soil is used more as a medium for holding plants in a vertical position so they can be chemically fertilized. As a result, American and Canadian farms are suffering from the worst soil erosion in history.

                        Protect Water Quality

Water makes up two-thirds of our body mass and covers three-fourths of the planet. Despite its importance, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates pesticides contaminate the ground water in 38 states, polluting the primary source of drinking water for more than half the country's population.

                        Save Energy

Farms have changed drastically in the last three generations, from the family-based small businesses dependent on human energy to large scale factory farms highly dependent on fossil fuels. Modern farming methods use more petroleum than any other single industry, consuming 12 percent of the country's total energy supply. More energy is now used to produce synthetic fertilizers than to till, cultivate, and harvest all the crops in the United States. Organic farming is still mainly based on labor-intensive practices such as weeding by hand and using green manures and crop covers rather than synthetic inputs.

                        Keep Chemicals off Your Plate

Many pesticides approved for use by the EPA were registered before extensive research linking these chemicals to cancer and other diseases had been established. Now the EPA considers that 60% of all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides and 30% insecticides are carcinogenic. A 1987 National Academy of Sciences report estimates that pesticides might be causing almost 1.5 million extra cases of cancer among Americans. Pesticides are implicated in birth defects, nerve damage, cancer, and genetic mutation.

                        Protect Farm Workers Health

A National Cancer Institute study found that farmers exposed to herbicides were six times more likely to develop cancer than non-farmers. In California, reported pesticide poisonings among farm workers have risen an average of 14% a year since 1973, and doubled between 1975 and 1985. Farm workers' health also is a serious problem in developing nations, where pesticides can be poorly regulated. An estimated one million people are poisoned annually by pesticides. Several of the pesticides banned from use in the United States are still manufactured here for export to other countries.

                        Help Small Farmers

Although growing numbers of large scale farms are making the conversion to organic practices, most organic farms are small independently-owned and operated family farms of less than 100 acres. It's estimated that the United States has lost more than 650,000 family farms in the past decade. With the US Department of Agriculture predicting that half of this country's farm production will come from 1% of farms by the year 2000, organic farming could become one of the few hopes left for family farms.

                        Support a True Economy

Although organic food might seem more expensive than conventional foods, conventional food prices do not reflect hidden cost borne by taxpayers, including nearly $74 billion in federal subsidies in 1988. Other hidden costs include pesticide regulation and testing, hazardous waste disposal and clean up, and environmental damage.

                        Promote Biodiversity

Mono cropping is the practice of planting large plots of land with the same crop year after year. While this approach tripled farm production between 1950 and 1970, the lack of natural diversity of plant life has left the soil lacking in natural minerals and nutrients. To replace the nutrients, chemical fertilizers are used, often in increasing amounts.

                        Taste Better Flavor

There's a good reason many chefs use organic foods in their recipes. They taste better. Organic farming starts with the nutrients of the soil which eventually leads to the nourishment of the plant and ultimately our palates.

Why We Should Have Our Children Eat Organic Food.

A 1993 published report by The National Academy of Science entitled, "Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children" has concluded that current government pesticide standards do not protect the health of children.

Since babies bodies are immature, and immune and detoxification systems are in a state of development, there is a greater vulnerability to pesticides.
Pound for pound, babies eat two to four times more vegetables and fruits than adults and so are exposed to a higher proportion of possible contaminants.

The health effects of chronic low level exposure to pesticide residues are still unknown.
Another released report, "Pesticides in Children's Food" by the Environmental Working Group, concluded that the largest contribution to a person's lifetime risk of cancer from pesticide residues occurs during childhood.

Apart from your baby's health, a more indirect reason to feed your children organic food is the fact that it supports the growth of organic farming. This in turn helps protect the health of the environment - keep pesticides out of the earth and water supply - and will help preserve the planet for them and their children.

The long term savings found in good health and a clean environment can more than offset the added costs of organic foods in the long run.

It was fun while it lasted...

Did you think prehistoric men had any idea about the evils of meat? We'd have eaten off the land and our bodies would've either killed us because we're not meant to eat meat, or our bodies naturally digested the food, or we've adapted through trial and error and evolution, and we still came out eating meat, and vege.

The vegan camp will always have their facts to back up their decision. But the meat camp will also have their facts to back up their decision. It's a natural instinct to want to justify our decisions in the face of opposing opinions.

Our bodies' chemistry has arrived at this point in our evolution when we CAN eat meat, and vege. If we're not going to trust evolution, then wtf?

btw, I do not have any interest in converting anyone including my close friends and family into non-meat-eaters and I would probably eat meat if it worked for me and my digestive system. Not eating meat has just seemed to have solved a lot health issues for me personally.
