    64 bit windows?

    Hi,
Anyone here using a 64 bit OS? I am interested in switching from a 32 bit vista to a 64 bit one and was wondering what are the pros and cons? My main reason behind doing this is to be able to use 4gb of ram.
    Thanks for any insight.

      Re: 64 bit windows?

Thanks, yeah I will definitely go 64 bit...had a read of what you^^ posted and some other stuff online; 64 bit is certainly the way to go...
I decided on upgrading my desktop...putting it together myself from my old one and some new stuff. This is my first time so any help is always welcome.
These are the blue prints so far:

      CPU: intel q6600 core2 quad 2.4 ghz (gonna overclock to 3 - 3.2 ghz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L ATX Board (not sure about this yet)
PSU: Corsair TX Series, 650 Watt
      GPU: keep my geForce 9800gtx+
keep my 360gb hard drive ...
and my 4gb of ram (for now)

any thoughts anyone? I still haven't made up my mind on a case for the whole thing...

I'm running Vista 64 w/ 4GB RAM at work now. Works great (albeit, Vista).

I want to upgrade to Win7, but just haven't with lots of things going down.

I just read that there are rumors Win7 is going straight to RC from Beta 1. Everything I read about it says it's extremely stable, you should go with Win7 x64. I'm using win7 in a virtual machine now on my Macbook Pro and it works great. - What Vista should have been.

Microsoft should give everyone that owns Vista a free upgrade. It certainly can't hurt their corporate image.
may the groove be with you

Been running Win7 for a few but mainly for media center. Its got its bugs I'll tell you that but definitely an extremely stable Beta release. Considering they've possibly just shaved a shit load of nonsense off of Vista and released it as Win7, I'd be surprised if it wasn't as stable

yes but with windows 7 now on the verge of release and with so much promise, I definitely recommend looking forward and not moving back to XP.

yes 64 bit OSes will be more effective in the way they use multiple cores and also more than 3.5 gb ram (your 32 bit processor will probably not use more than 3.4 gb ram even if you have 4 gigs of it)

Yup.... 64bit Vista with 8GB of RAM on the gaming computer.

However, I don't recommend using an HTPC with 64 bit Vista yet. The codec support isn't just there yet, lacking some 64 bit codecs/splitters (most importantly Haali)

                      I haven't tried W7 yet, but I will wait till beta 2....

                        Re: 64 bit windows?

i just remove win7 from my pc since i read about mp3 corruption with media player, or something like that...
so i just installed windows vista ultimate on it and it looks sweet i have never used it before but im pretty happy with it its 32 version and my score is 5.8 and the reason with it its because of my harddriver, everything else has 5.9

anyway it detect me my 4gb of ram...
and that thing of dreamscene its pretty cool, the animated wallpapers are exellent...

later im going to try win 64 to determiate performanse but im v ery happy with vista rite now...its only that i am just to much curious about software and since my comp is new i just want it tro try everything

                          Re: 64 bit windows?

I mostly work to my systems with Windows 64bit versions from XP Pro x64 SP2, to Windows Server 2008 x64 Datacenter.

Although Windows x64 are proved to be more stable to their core architecture, you may encounter some incompatibilities especially if you need to build a DAW (digital Audio Workstation) and generally if you want to work with specific Music Gear and Software.

Please specify exactly whatdo you intent to do with your machine, so that I can guide you to the specific OS choice according to your needs.

I have 64bit Seven for few weeks now, system alone is working perfectly,
all hardware is perfectly recognized, but i am having a bunch of problems running older software like MS Localization Studio, Trados, virtual drive emulators like Deamon Tools and like.

I really hope that those folks who bought Vista will get Seven as an free upgrade, 'cos it really looks that way, too.
