        USA Weekend Magazine - http://www.usaweekend.com/02_issues/...28joaquin.html
        Issue Date: July 28, 2002

Appearing two years ago on "Late Show With David Letterman", he couldn't remember his birthday (Oct. 28, 1974). Jay Leno was so frustrated by an incoherent Phoenix that he suggested the actor "be here in person next time."

"He should not do the talk shows," declares his longtime agent, Iris Burton. "He gets nervous." Burton, who also represents heartthrob Josh Hartnett, discovered Phoenix and his four siblings -- River, Rain, Liberty and Summer -- when they were singing for quarters on a Los Angeles sidewalk. Joaquin was then known as Leaf. "They were on the street. The father's in sandals," Burton recalls of seeing them perform for the first time. "I found the kids and brought them to everybody."

It was fun while it lasted...

I applaud him for quitting something he is good at ,and taking on an adventure to try something else.

Damn... that was horrible. Letterman didn't look too happy about the whole gum under the table.

He must be doing it for publicity or something. Who knows....? Atleast he's a hell of an actor!

It will be interesting to see whether this Joaquin thing really is a big set up or if he just made the healthy decision to get back on heroin as fast as possible.

Right at the beginning it felt like he nearly laughed when Dave made his unabomber joke.

you know several years ago Johnny Depp was on Leno and his performance, while note as stoned as Joaquin's, was still out there. He seemed "disconnected", was hesitant with his answers and showed nearly no emotion/smiled at the crowd when he was on stage. Apparently, Depp also has an interest in collecting rare butterflies and moths and when Leno presented him with one of the rarest finds you could put in a glass box, he didnt even smile. he looked at it and just stared back blankly at Leno.
