    Classic Sasha Story

"I was in South Africa, playing a private party, and I was in an altered state, so I ended up DJ'ing for about eight hours straight. The guy who owned the sound system asked me if he could record the set. I said sure. When I finish, I'm so buzzing I think, 'Fuck, this set is going to be the basis of my next CD!' I'd done all these mixes I'd never done before -- I was completely in the zone.

The guy comes up to me and says, 'Why don't you give me your address and I'll mail you a copy of these Minidiscs?' I said, 'Listen, dude, I'm going to have to take those Minidiscs and send you a copy, because I really need to analyze what I played.' The guy disappears and then comes back in a real huff, handing me discs and saying, 'You said I could record your set and then you took it back, so I've erased them.' But I had seen him writing on the discs as he was recording them, and these were all blank, so I knew he still had them.

I got into a huge row with him, and we got more and more wound up. The decks were right next to the swimming pool, and I just knocked the entire lot over while my partner John Digweed was in the middle of the mix! I smashed everything up and then got in a car and left."

    + a classic quote:

"Strippers absolutely love progressive house. It's very cool. We definitely lucked out there."
    sigpicSimonR

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

haha that's just awesome -- great fucking story.

to be honest, i really wouldn't even get pissed if they were too fucked up to play, because i'll most likely be too fucked up myself, lol. i guess it's all a matter of which substance and the degree of discriminative intake that influences the length and level of performance. i've heard stories about them bombing, but i've never seen one of them too drunk (or whatever) to spin with my own eyes. in all actuality, i'm not going to over analyse Sasha and Digweed, because in my honest opinion -- they have earned the right to party on and make a few fumbles, no doubt. i've only been djing for a little while now, and i've made fails before, but it taught me to exercise discipline and self-awareness, when it comes to spinning and knowing my limits; all this for the sake of the audience.

by the way, does anyone know the origin/ID to that one house tune with the vocals that go something like this: "...the dj took pills and was compelled to play for 7 days.." i heard it in a set, but can't seem to locate which one tho. arghh.

          99% sure it's on Digweed's Beirut set.

few years back Sasha came to play in Cairo in one off party in a place on the nile, but the party was cancled by the police !! so the promoters moved the party in the last min into someone Villa and Sasha was cool to play for 200 ppl max in privet Villa, he was very cool about it and we had a laugh about the police and he told us story about how it used to be when he started in uk long ago.

Kinda expected the story to end with him playing back the Minidiscs and it sounding like absolute shit because he was so fucked and in the zone. That'd have been funny. 8hrs of Barbie Girl.

The annecdote from a 2002 Rolling Stone interview ... but could have taken place any time between 1997 and 2002.

                    This made me laugh too

"I let the record run out once.

I was actually quite the worse for wear, and when I put on my favorite record at the time, I just ran out on the dance floor. The record finished, and I was in the middle of the crowd with my eyes closed and my arms in the air, just caught up in the record.

I walked back up to the DJ booth, and everyone went mental. It was quite a moment."
