    Vista gremlins

    I bought a new pc last week (long overdue) and a couple of things are annoying me as i can't sort them - any help or suggestions appreciated;
It runs on vista by the way which is new to me completely
If i click on an mp3 (to play it) that is hosted on a site then i get "explorer cannot display the webpage" - clicking an mp3 saved in my machine plays no problem and i've had friends try the same links online to see if the links themselves are good and they all say no problem. So it's at my end for sure - if i download the file it does it ok and embedded files play ok - ..
    cheers

vista sucks I cant stand it - I'm trying to work out how to get the "upgrade" back to XP !

But I dont have the problems yo have - is there a difference between firefox and IE on playing these files?

also - you said embedded files play fine? so how are the music files you cant play different?

      Re: Vista gremlins

when i say an mp3 in a link i mean like this

where the file is hosted within the site and you can either left click to play or right to d/l - if you click the link does it play ? it doesn't my end any more

if i were to embed that same file in a webpage and open the webpage then it will play that way but that's not always what i want to do - before in xp i had no problems like this

also if trying to upload pics to some sites or galleries it just won't let me - no error or explaination, it just doesn't do it

i wonder if by making it more "secure" they're stopping it from actually being functional?

not sure about firefox i don't use it mate

I think you hit the nail on the head here. that was my biggest complaint with Vista -- they made it so "secure," it was a pain in the ass to do even the most simple of tasks...

hmmm - gimme a shout huggie when you get the xp up/downgrade - i think i need it too
when xp came out i vaguely remember everyone saying it was crap and going back to their (there / they're) old systems but microsoft have a way of making you toe the line in the end i guess.

so toasty, what do you use now?

also i've got a blog and since having new machine i sign in and no posts show up at all which is dogshit of course...
contacted "help" at blog hosting site and they say it's all working fine their end so the problem is mine - cheers

i've had to uninstall nero as burned 3 discs and they all sounded terrible - clicking and popping all over them - not sure if that's nero or another vista bug?....

anyway apart from all that it's great - ha

My primary machine is a MacBook, and when I run windows on it, I run XP. I also have 2 PCs, one XP and one Vista, although the Vista box is used strictly as a media center. If I used the Vista machine for more than what I use it for, I'd probably upgrade it to XP.

love that you have to pay extra now to "downgrade" to XP

                  Re: Vista gremlins

Another thing with Vista that just blows me away is the idea that it needs 2G of RAM to function as it should. That's not a big deal as much now, but when it came out, 2G was far from standard and a lot of brand new computers would ship with only a gig or even 512 for some of the budget systems. I suspect that very few casual users had 2 G of RAM, either. The idea that you would have to upgrade your hardware for your computer to run something that, if it's working properly, you shouldn't even really notice is just obnoxious, I think. People don't boot up their computers just to dip around with the operating system.

If you ask people to upgrade their systems or buy new computers to use your shiny new operating system, you need to bring the noise IMO.

                    Re: Vista gremlins

Yeah you're not kidding - what a twisted industry. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if i was doing that to people. Which may explain why mr gates is the richest man in the world and i haven't got a pot to piss in???
Ages ago i used to use cakewalk a lot and decided to upgrade to the latest one - you know how it goes, you pay about 100 quid to get another version of something you just paid 300 quid for anyway but this one has all the faults fixed that you have suffered with since you bought it and would kind of hoped they'd help you out with anyway but they didn't.
Trouble is while they may have sorted the old problems, they burden you with a load of new ones by bolting on so many bells and whistles that the thing isn't as stable as before and pushes your machine to the limit all the time to the point where you have to upgrade it to keep up. In the eyes of the industry, if you're machine is 2 years old or more then you're clearly a complete twat.
So should i try firefox? seems most of the bother has been net related though i'm yet to install half my software so guess there's plenty more headache to come..

thanks for your help and suggestions people - and here's to bill gates eh ?

                        ok cheers for that

most of the web glitches are sorted thanks to firefox

putting in sound software has been a whole new bag of shit altogether - not got any of it working yet - not helped by the fact that i'm asked at every turn for a serial number that i never made a note of or a disc i haven't seen for years or to confirm a password i created 5 yrs ago etc etc
                        wank
2 pieces of software that i have all the stuff for (disc, serial no.) i can't even get past the install screen - i get the welcome page and when i click install it disappears - no error no nothing ??
one of these is sonar so i been looking through forums and all i found was someone saying that was caused by something called "virtual CD" but i don't know for sure what that is or how to get rid. In the same forum someone asked if it could be removed and the answer came back no so i'm a bit fooked now

if a person exists in the world who keeps all their shit together like serial numbers, upgrades, install discs etc etc then i salute them

                        no i don't i fucking hate them - tonight anyway - cheers

being told a lot of my software is simply not supported by vista so hitting dead ends with some of it but slowly getting there with the stuff that is. cheers people
