    Valkyrie

I tried doing a search and was surprised that nobody made a thread about it. This, imo, was a spectacular movie. It was a highly suspenseful movie, always having me on the edge of my seat. I'd recommend watching it if you haven't, especially if you're a big ww2 movie buff.

    Re: Valkyrie

I saw it a couple of weeks ago...honestly I didn't think it was worth making a thread about. I know the story very well and its been exaggerated as everything in Hollywood. Poor little Nazi's...bla bla. Why didn't they try to kill him before the Russian's started pushing them back and before D-day...trying to exonerate the German people with a film like this is a joke honestly.

I know there was some real resistance from the start to the Nazi's in Germany but it didn't come from the army.

As far as the film is concerned its not bad...the director did the best job IMO and if I didn't feel so strongly about the history involved I probably would have liked the film. . .one thing I was thinking all the way through is they should have put a load of ballberings around the c4 that would have ade it work in all conditions.

I didn't see it that way, nor did I see it as a film trying to 'exonerate' the Germans. I did see it as a film that tried to show that there were groups trying to steer away from Hitler's Germany and that assassinating Hitler took some balls. The plot they came up was very well thought out, and in fact, pretty god dam smart if you ask me. The penetration of the 'wolf's lair' isn't something an average joe could do, and from what I've read, that penetration was historically accurate.

If you put aside your bias, you'll see a well acted movie depicting an almost flawless attempt at assassinating Hitler and potentially changing the course of history.

Localizer how was Cruise's acting? I heard from a few different people the movie would have been excellent but his acting killed it at every angle. Thanks

You didn't see it that way? What about the note at the end of the film?
Anyway as I say tastes differ...I didn't say I have biases as I don't I just studied far too much history of Nazi Germany. The main thing that is inaccurate is that the movement against Hitler was not as numerous as depicted in the movie...
One thing that was good is supporting actors...all the sall roles very acted well. I don't like tom cruz very much but he also did his part well...

Imo, I think he acted very well. So much so, that I got engrossed in his character and the story and left behind Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise might be weird, crazy, and imo a douchebag, but I think the guy is a great actor, and I think he did a great job in this movie.

Certainly, I'm sure that the movement was more exaggerated than depicted. However, for me, I wasn't so much so interested in the movement as I was in the ability of this resistance to get so close to Hitler as to assassinate him. But ya, you're right, tastes do differ.

I digged the movie , which is probably the best stuff tom cruise has done in the last 6 years ,

I think the tension is very well built around the whole plan to assasinate hitler ,

A movie I would def watch again.

Saw the movie, and it was....good. Not fantastic, but a decent watch. Entertaining. I was a bit disappointed as to how they ended the movie. I thought they could have been more creative than that. I'd give ita 7/10. Definitely a rent, if you seem to be unable to find something else.

Sure, I know it's a historic movie. But it was rather dull for an ending. Could have been way more dramatic.

                          Re: Valkyrie

I wanted to like the film more, but Tom Cruise was the wrong person for the role of the lead. He might have had some physical similarities to the person he portrayed, but surrounding Cruise with some major league British acting talent, elevates the supporting cast to a level that makes you painfully aware of Cruise's shortcomings as an actor.

Overall, it's an interesting idea - and reminded me of an HBO film called Conspiracy that had Kenneth Branaugh and Stanley Tucci recreating a meeting between the various power players in Germany (this is based on actual documents recovered at the end of WWII). The film itself shows the turning point in Germany where the Gestapo and the Nazi party started to take actual power and started to introduce the idea of concentration camps and gas chambers to the Nazi agenda. It wasn't an idea that was embraced by all involved, some going along with the agenda, for fear of reprisal (as were most of Hitler's political opponents during his rise to power).

I don't think Valkyrie was sympathetic to the Nazis at all - it offered a dissenting point of view, and showing that evil isn't quite as cut and dry absolutism as people would like to believe. You can't help but wonder what would have happened and how different the course of WWII would have been if they had actually succeeded with their plot to kill Hitler.
