Why would Ted Kennedy be Knighted by the Queen of England???

Breaking news, political news, and investigative news reporting from Raw Story's team of journalists and prize-winning investigators.

This is weird to me that one of the top American politicians is to be knighted by the queen of England.

You can't tell me you wouldn't find it enormously cool to be knighted, to have your official title be Sir ______. I've been trying to get into the Queen's good graces for years in the hopes she'd bless me with a knighthood. So far, she hasn't noticed, though.

That's because, presumably, you aren't an incompetent alcoholic with a shady history of nepotism and political protection?

Re: Why would Ted Kennedy be Knighted by the Queen of England???

He will not be "Sir Ted,'' but he will receive an honorary knighthood: British Prime Minister Gordon Brown today is announcing the honor for the ailing Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass), known in Britain for his advocacy of peace in Northern Ireland.

Real knighthood has been reserved for the likes of Paul McCartney and Elton John. Only the true British knights are not entitled to the honorific of "Sir" or "Dame.''

The British government said today that Kennedy will be awarded an honorary knighthood for his service to U.S.-U.K. relations and to Northern Ireland. After Brown delivered an address to a joint meeting of the U.S. House and Senate today, Kennedy's son, Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), stepped up to shake the prime minister's hand.

Knighthoods are bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II, the honorees chosen by the government or an advisory committee.

"Kennedy, scion of an Irish-American political dynasty, is known in Britain for his involvement in the long process that led to Northern Ireland's 1998 Good Friday peace accord,'' the AP reports from London.

The 77-year-old brother of the late President John F. Kennedy has served in the Senate since 1962. He is being treated for a brain tumor.

Other Americans who have received honorary knighthoods: Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

It was in 1997 that McCartney, the best-known surviving face and bassist of the Beatles who had once joked about smoking marijuana in the Buckingham Palace toilets, faced Queen Elizabeth in knighthood for helping to revolutionize pop music. Elton John, singer of the "Candle in the Wind'' tribute at Princess Diana's funeral, was knighted in '97, too.

It was fun while it lasted...

I bet it's because of a 3-way the queen had with Ted and JFK in the 60's, era of free love and all.

That's exactly how it happened - till marilyn monroe walked in on them so they killed her to keep it quiet.
JFK thought about going public so he got sorted too - ted was the only one to keep it hushed so she chose to bless him with her sword - just as he'd done to her all those years ago

not agreeing, but that's certainly better than the alternative right now.

That depends...Toasty do you only vote for Dems no matter what? or do you vote based on the individuals running?

Also, Not all politicians put their party affiliation before their name, many of them have enough personal integrity and confidence to be able to work across party lines, even when it is not popular.

It is fundamental to see all dems, indie's and repub's the same and it is fundamentalist thinking such as this that keeps our country divided.

Divisiveness is what the last administration thrived on btw.
