Desyn was so kind and answered some questions for me a couple of weeks ago. This was for a Norwegian clubbing site, but I thought you guys might wanted to read it too.
What have you been up to lately? Can you tell us about the tour you did with Digweed in the states and that appearance on cnn?
we did 9 dates, the best for me were miami, new york, chicago and montreal. the last night in montreal both me and jon got totally hammered - i only just made my flight at 9pm the next evening... tour was fun, crowds were really cool everywhere..
Your new Bedrock cd seems to have given you a lot of cool gigs around the world lately, any gigs that have been really strange or special in one way or another?
to be honest im no more busy now than i have been for the past 2 years, just now most of my dates coming up are labeled bedrock tour dates as they are around the time of the cd launch so it helps expose the cd. i had a really special gig in peru, the people there i really felt their energy and there was this one guy who came to shake my hand b4 the gig and wouldnt let go for over a minute he was squeezing my hand really hard kind of giving me some energy i felt and i played one of the best gigs ive ever done after that. the people in south america have a lot of passion and love for the music, its really special place to experience playing in.
Getting an essential mix is a very big thing for a dj to get, was it harder to compile that mix than your original series cd?
no the emix was soo easy in comparison, i had so many licensing problems on the bedrock cd that it was hard for me to put it together, it took me about a month in the end of redoing it and rearranging it... and once id have it done once, then id find out another track i couldnt use, so id have to do it again... was really really tough... i was pulling my hair out at one point. with people actually paying money for the cd i felt i had to put only my the highest quality tracks on there i had and its really hard for me to find this types of records that i really love and express wot i feel so (theres not many out there!) so to have quite a few of them taken of the album for licnening problems was tough. the emix on the other hand you dont have to worry about licensing and the whole thing came together in a day from planniing to recording.. compared to over a month on the bedrock album!
You and 2 of the other “Idiots” did a gig at Turnmills a little while ago, any tour plans together?
idiots is ongoing, its a big plan for the future.. we have a new member now, rowan blades.. we are all best friends and long term we all want to put out an artist album.. we expect this to be something we are working on for at least another year or two, as we want it to be something really special. no tour plans at the moment, although we love to play together as much as we can..
How did you start of your dj career? Did you promote your own club nights?
all started mainly from one mix cd, i sent it out to 100 people and got gigs from it internatioanlly ... about 12 month after i sent the cd out i was fired from work (for never working on always looking for records on the net!) and since then have survived (barely most of the time!) from djing... ive done a few nights yes in london, but nothing big, and most of them just turned into very messy 3 or 4 day sessions, so they didnt really help my dj career at all but defo was fun and inspiring to do this
You are known for re-editing a lot of the tunes you play, do you think that is getting more and more important for djs to do that to stand out from other djs?
not really, all that matters is wot comes out of those speakers and you can make amazing set i think with just a great selection of records.. editing is just a way of making more great records out of records that may have great parts but need improving in one way or another. i see a lot of djs doing edits of records just for the sake of doing edits, for example just making small extentions to the beats or arrangement, this is quite anal most of the time and no one really notices, its easy to get carried away with the editing stuff, but at the end of the day its only worth doing if it really needs it or will make a big difference... the most important thing is the records the djs selectiing and i believe a good dj will spend most of his time searching out the best records to play, becasue they are quite hard to find.
Can you tell us something about the new upcoming alternative route and sexonwax releases?
check my interview on prog sounds, i list them all there
I have heard you are starting a new label soon, symphonic records, with dj rollo, Dusk and Schmuel ram, will this label have any genre limitiations or will you guys release anything amazing?
anything amazin is the idea
You have a background from computers, has that helped you to learn production software quicker, and figure out the small trix that might make some good differences between good or amazing tune?
my background was more in computer programming, so music software was pretty hard to get my head around really as its totally different. i dont think it helps that much to be honest, i think its more to do with ur ear for the music, for instance danny howells did this edit of a dave clark track and he only made some really small touches but they made so much difference... and im still amazed when i hear it at wot he did, and danny doesnt come from a computer background, so i dont think computers helps at all really, its more natural musical talent thats going to give you those tricks
What do you think about people recording your dj sets? Good promotion or even harder to keep your secret bombs?
for djs trying to break though i think its ok for them to be secretive about tracks as everyone needs to work hard to really stand out so thats coool to keep secrets... but for bigger djs i think any/all of them should let their live sets out now and a gain...its good for everyone i think - as long as theres not already too many recent sets out there by them .. other wise its overaturation. and i dont mind people finding out my secret weapons, infact i will happily tell people about my tunes.. i often reply to posts on message boards of people asking about my tracks.... its nice to have a record to yourself for a while that you worked hard to find as its your ear and hard work thats chosen it and there a lot of djs that dont listen for themselves and just copy other people so u want to make sure you are separated from them for a while... and i think its good for the scence for the bigger djs to tell people about their records - it helps the scene then.. some djs its obvious dont say anything when asked about a record and wont reveal names of stuff or purposely ignore it, but surely if a record is good then it should be played regardless of whether a few trainspotters or other djs in the club know about it or not? djs being secretive forever about a tune is a sad and bad attitude imo. it prevents the best music from spreading and making the scene better. it can only be a good thing if more people get to hear a good record i think.
Which djs do you think are amazing atm and who do you think will break through soon?
the djs i reallt rate on the international scene are rowan blades, leon roberts and omid 16b (all phenomenal djs)
and other amaizing djs ive heard that i think will come through soon are...
livio from romania
rollo from israel
violet from argentina
Since your life is “music” do you ever relax without it on your mind?
not really
