Anyone into chess here?

I am going to try and start playing more,I've known the rules forever, but I am terrible. It helps that I have a turn by turn based multiplayer app I just found on my iphone which is wanting me to get back into the game again and play more.

Does anyone have any good books on chess openings and theory or a good online site that will explain stuff thoroughly? I am terrible and need explanations for why this/that is good and also help learning the notation. A big encyclopedia reference with just pics and moves will not be helpful here as this is something I can't learn that way.

i play all the time on yahoo.games online, here you find different levels , you can see at whitch level your opponent is by looking at his her score

Found chess on my macbook while waiting for a flight out of Atlanta recently, I was stoked until the computer kept winning

if you play your cards right, you may be able to get Kamal/Tom to put a chess up so members can play each other

that would be fun. especially if it can be correspondence like, ie it can be played move by move at a time when each person logs back on.

We could have a chess match that takes days, weeks or even months to finish. I'd prefer that though. My problem with chess is I can spot the immediate danger but I spend that much time thinking about the next, then the next move and so on, that I forget about the danger that was put in front of me in the first place. Bang, silly move and the queen has gone!

I'd be up for it here if we could.

I can never remember the rules of it..So, always said fuck it. I like the appeal of it, just haven't put the effort in learning. I suck.

I played a lot when I was younger .. but never really studied it and stopped at the point I needed to study games to advance.

I do enjoy a game, especially on holiday or (in the past) backpacking. Great game and a great way to break the ice.
