The Official statement from King Abdulaziz Public Library About the Winners of The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation, in Its Second Year
    1429H (200

The Award, in its second year under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the Supreme Head of the King Abdulaziz public Library Board, has achieved worldwide recognition as a channel for global expansion of beneficial knowledge, bridging the language barriers in the quest of assisting lifelong learning.
The awards are assigned to five key categories, namely:
    1.Translation award for institutions.
2.Translation award in the Humanities from Arabic into other languages.
    3. Translation in the Humanities from other languages into Arabic.
4Translation award in the Natural Sciences from Arabic into other languages.
5.Translation award in the Natural Sciences from other languages into Arabic.
By the Grace of Allah(s.w.t.) the judging panel, on the recommendation of the specialized consultant professionals in each category, has carefully evaluated all of this year's entries presented to The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation in the above-mentioned categories. After lengthy deliberation the following decisions, regarding the winners of each category, have been reached.
First: The translation award for institutions:
The translation award for institutions goes to the King Saud University Translation Center (KSUTC). Since its inception, the centre has produced a large number of quality translations in various fields, from a number of languages into Arabic, and vice versa. The KSUTC has translated more than 300 works from various languages in to Arabic, including English, Italian, Japanese, French, and Turkish. These translations cover several fields of study covering the Natural Sciences, Information Computer Technology, and Humanities. The centre has also launched a specialized science translation series including the Oxford Basic Series in Chemistry, the Physics Dictionary, a general medical series under the title Lecture Notes, and other works in the medical specialist area of study. The KSUTC has developed a streamlined process for accurately translating high quality works into various target languages, whist at the same time upholding the international standards of copyright laws for intellectual property. In addition to its translation works, the centre has also contributed to global information sharing by conducting the “Promoting Arabization and the Development of Translation” conference, invigorating the discussion of translation-related issues in the Arab world.
Second: Translation award in the Humanities from Arabic into other languages:
The translation award in the Humanities from Arabic to other languages jointly goes to two outstanding entrants:
1.Dr. Choi Yuong Kil, the Korean professor of Arabic Studies at Myongji University , has been given his share of the award for his excellent translation, from Arabic into Korean ( Prophet Mohammad ), of the book 'Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum', written by Sheikh Safi-Ur-Rahman Al Mubarakfuri. The translation represents excellence in terms of its overall high quality, precision in word choice, clarity of meaning, and eloquence in both language and style. This unique work represents a significant contribution to knowledge in the area of Humanities, by conveying important elements of Islamic heritage to Korean-speaking people both in Asian societies and beyond. In fact, it is the very first translation to Korean of the biography of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) from the Arabic original.
    2. Dr. Mohammad Al-Tahir AE-Mesawi, the Sudanese professor of Philosophy and Islamic Heritage at the University of Malaysia, has been given his share of the award for his translation from Arabic to English of the book 'Maqaassidh Al-Shari’ah Al-Islaamiyyah' (Treaties on Maqasid AL – shari'ah ), written by Mohammad Al-Tahir Ibn Ashur. The Arabic original is characterized by elequently dealing with the complex subject matter surrounding the area of islamic law including: the description and explanation of definite versus hypothetical aims of Sari'ah, analysis of Shari’ah rulings, criteria for Shari’ah aims, the concept of good versus bad, discussion of fitrah (natural human instinct), barriers in preventing evil, financial transactions; and other social legal issues such as: tolerance, equality, and freedom. Having thoroughly grasp the concepts and subject matter of the original Arabic text, the translator was able to accurately produce an excellent translation that maintained consistency with the original, in terms of both meanings and language.
Third: Translation award in the Humanities from other languages into Arabic:
The translation award in the Humanities from other languages into Arabic jointly goes to:
1.Dr. Fayez Al-Suya?, the Jordanian professor of socio-economics has been given his share of the award for his translation from English into Arabic of the book The Age of Capital (1848-1875), written by Eric Hobsbawm. The value of the English original lies in its objective surveying of the historical events which directly contributed to the rise of contemporary capitalism, events which played a crucial role in the economic transformations the world is witnessing today. The book predicted later events that followed the surveyed epoch, such as the rise of very influential economies like the European community, the international common market, the World Trade Organization, and free markets. The Arabic translation is distinguished in terms of its overall high quality, excellent language use, and consistency and clarity of meaning when compared with the original.
    2. Dr. Bander Ibn Nasser Al-Otaibi and Dr. Haniyyah Mahmoud Ahmad Merza, the Saudi professors of Special Education at King Saud University, have been given their share of the awarded for their translation from English into Arabic of the book 'Teaching Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities', authored by Mark Wolrey, Melinda Ault and Patricia Doyle. It deals with a number of topics describing how to effectively teach students with disabilities by emphasizing instructional procedures. These procedures form a set of strategies that when integrated into schooling, scaffold teaching and learning into a more effective organized curriculum. The book combines both theoretical and applied aspects of special education for effectively educating this special segment of our society. The Arabic translation is distinguished in terms of its language and consistency with the English original.
Fourth: Translation award in the Natural Sciences from other languages into Arabic:
Translation award in the Natural Sciences from other languages into Arabic goes to Dr. Hatim Al-Najdy, the Syrian professor of electronics and communication at The Syrian University, for his translation from English into Arabic of the book ' System Engineering Management ' written by Benjamin Blanchard. The book is considered one of the few books dealing with the fundamentals of computer and information systems and how to manage them. This excellent translation is a clear and accurate representation of the original text. It manifests a high level of coherence, clarity of meaning and is consistently successful in the transfer of scientific terminology from English into Arabic.
Fifth: Translation award in the Natural Sciences from Arabic into other languages:
Translation award in the Natural Sciences from Arabic into other languages was withheld due to absence of applicants. However, based on the vision of the Award as an effective tool in the intercultural communication, and as a vehicle to scientific and intellectual advancement, and as a recognition of outstanding efforts by individuals in the field of translation, it has been decided-this year- to devote the amount specified for this category to translating few highly-selected works, and to honor individuals who have devoted their time and efforts to translate works from and into Arabic.
