Re: Milk
Brando. Grant. Fonda. Newman. Freeman. Spacey. Malkovich. Nicholson. Pacino. Caine. Hopkins. Day-Lewis. Ford.
I think behind that are some other great actors. Fiennes, Walken, Redford, Norton, DeNiro, and Murray, but I would be hard-pressed to put them in the top list above.
I mean, what has Penn done that was so amazing? Milk is his biggest movie in some time (I thought Mystic River was total shit. just utter, utter shit). I mean, for him, we're going back to 1995 with Dead Man Walking, which I guess was ok. But, to call him a great actor with such a sparse record of great lead acting, is a hard argument to make to me.
I don't even know if i could put him in a top 40. I mean, there are actors out there that have 2, maybe 3 times more great acting parts than penn has mediocre parts. Connery? Costner? Bridges? Jackson? Travolta? Even DiCaprio does a better job acting than Penn.
Anyways.
There you have it.Comment

Re: Milk
I would at least add him to your 2nd list, thought he was excellent in I Am Sam, All the Kings Men, Mystic River, Milk.
I gained a lot of respect for Penn for taking action in New Orleans after Katrina btw.

Re: Milk
I dug it. I dislike Penn as a person (sometimes takes himself too seriously - see the letter he wrote to Trey Parker and Matt Stone for proof) and I really hated I Am Sam (saw it as cheap Oscar bait - going for the Rain Man vote), but he really did disappear into the role and deserved the recognition that he got. What really impressed me is how Gus Van Sant manages to get some great and very convincing performances out of his cast like James Franco, Emile Hirsh and others.Comment

Re: Milk
I like gay people and have nothing against them or related to their lifestyle , art , stories etc. pretty much most of them I find them straight forward, friendly, and lively.
btw the other day I found it interesting and it didnt bother me at all when I saw that video History of house music , that the roots of House music were based on a gay scene .
Anyways regarding this movie I got to say i really enjoyed it , now Sean penn even know i think he is a dick and has made many homophobic comments , thought that the way he played this role was splendid, just shows what an amazing actor he is .
The dynamism of the film was pretty good , this is something I would def. watch again.

Re: Milk
true. he did do quite a bit down there in helping. But that, or any other philanthropic work he does, should not be factored into stage skills. I think the guy is actually more known for his activism than his acting, until Milk came out, that is.Comment
