    Re: Abstinence from alcohol

There was a time when I'd go out pretty much every night and really whoop it up. Those days are gone, but it's still pretty common for me to have a drink or two at night, most often a glass of wine or two with dinner or a little Captain and diet. What I have cut down on dramatically is drinking to the point where I'm feeling it the next morning. We have a newborn at home, and there is a direct correlation between the amount I drink and the amount it sucks when I have to wake up to tend to her in the middle of the night, so unless there's an actual event, half a bottle of wine tends to be my max. I do still go out and kick it old school from time to time, tho. Opening weekend of the NCAA Tourney, for example, will be just such an occasion.

I actually really enjoy the taste of most alcoholic beverages and as to wine in particular, if they made a non-alcoholic wine that was worth a hill of beans, I might consider keeping some around the house for instances when I just can't drink at all for whatever reason.

I recon I drink pretty much every day, but have at least 1 month off a year just to proove I can and to save some cash. It's always a struggle - I used to smoke and gave that up very easily, and recon I could with most things, drugs included (nothing power, pill or herb based for over 3 months now) but i'd struggle to give up the grog

I think if it's affecting your life in negative ways and you're sick & tired of it then you're answering your own question. My problem is I can't have 1 of anything. Life is good sober I gotta say much better than when I was getting wasted all the time. Good luck man.

Another problem I have is that I am just getting tired of the taste of the beers around here. It is getting to the stage where after just 2 pints I am looking for something different to drink because the taste is annoying me.

I went to Germany last year for a 3 day stag 'weekend' and drank pretty solidly all the time I was awake. The difference was that the beer actually tasted lovely, it came in a classy glass each time and it was actually a privilege to have a beer. It is not like that in the UK.

I think wine may be the way forward - I have always liked the taste of red wine, but only after a few beers. Can't say I've ever had wine with an evening meal so I suppose it's worth a shot.

As I live in Yorkshire at the mo, there's tons of proper pubs with guests ales and they seriously look after their barrels. I rarely drink lager unless I'm clubbing or abroad. Bitter seems to make me less hung over too.

BTW - wine with food is great ... a nice red with a spag bol, casserole or medium rare steak is the business

I've only been to the UK once but I liked the beer there, especially the John Smith's, because it was so light and refreshing. I could see how you could get tired of drinking the beer though because the alcohol content is so low it takes 4-5 pints before I even feel anything. Only had a slight hangover one night but I drank over a dozen pints hanging out with relative in-laws.

My personal tastes are 2-3 good beers (porters or stouts) or 1-2 gin and tonics 2-4 nights a week. Just enough to take the edge off. Even on the rare occasions I visit the bars these days I nurse a pint for at least a good half hour. Outside of being on vacation or the occasional soiree I hardly ever pass the point of buzzed.

Going to see Burridge this weekend though and I will surely throw a few down Saturday night. Moderation unless the occasion calls for something else

I fear that I could keep up with the best of boozers on this board. While my consumption has declined over the years, I still drink 2 - 3 nights a week, more in the summer.
Thankfully, I'm rarely hungover, but when I am....ouch!
You know the point when you're so drunk most people would puke, well I don't do that anymore. It seems the old eject button ain't workin'. Sometimes I wish it did.
That said, I haven't had a dring since Sat. but that'll change tonight.

Yeah, I havenīt puked from the booze in fuckinī ages and strange as it sounds, sometimes Iīd rather have that happen. To make space for more booze.
