is like mp3 but more compress, not many use it, I rather find something in mp4, perhaps is for specific kind of sound -
MPEG-4. But its uses depend on whether your talking about audio or video.
Audio wise. MPEG-4 is an AAC audio compliant format developed by Apple, as a means to have a similar compression as MP3, but a superior sound quality. But its not really mainstream, and much can't be done with it ATM.

MPEG-4 Video is also a compression standard, and is readily available in the form of DivX5, XviD, 3ivX, and other such mpeg video compression formats.
