    Bill O on Adam Lambert

Not sure who watches American Idol -- or is willing to admit that they watch American Idol, but there is one contestant this year, Adam Lambert, who is probably one of the frontrunners to win the whole thing. Also, while they've made no mention of it on the show, some photos have surfaced on the internets making it pretty clear that Adam is gay.

Bill O'Reilly has just gotten wind of the fact that there is a gay person on American Idol, and his reaction -- especially his shock that this might not guarantee that he'll be promptly voted out -- is hysterical:

I do love how he throws in his "not that there's anything wrong with that" thing at the end, though.

I think his audience is comprised of political voters moreso than American Idol voters. That being the case, his argument is voicing the political maintstream America fundamental voter psychology. Clearly he doesn't watch the show or care much at all about American Idol, and he's assuming that the voters embody the voter psychology of mainstream America. Without him having knowledge of who the voter demographic is for the show, I think his questions are relevant, what else is left to consider that I am not seeing?

It was fun while it lasted...

Well, I'm going to disagree with the premise underlying what you're saying, which as I understand it is that Bill O -- either in general or just on this point -- represents mainstream America. He's probably not quite as divisive as Rush or Hannity, but he's much closer to the far right than he is the middle, generally speaking.

As for this specific issue, I still think he's off the reservation. Do moderate, mainstream Americans still express shock that a gay guy could be successful as a singer? Perhaps its just the circles I run with, but it seems to me that homophobia is more the exception than the rule nowadays, and I actually thought it was funny that Bill would think that that would probably disqualify him in the eyes of the voters. The general public accepting gay people in the entertainment world is hardly a new development.

Edit: actually, as I look back at your post again, you may not be saying what I initially thought you were saying, so this might all be moot.

it shouldn't matter what his sexual preference is as long as it is with humans I am probably gay for watching idol, but the guy is a hell of a performer. He should win

What shouldn't surprise anyone is that those who watch Fox who are homophobic will continue to think that their views are mainstream ad infinitum. These folks live in slimy little bubbles of their own making where homophobic, sexist, & racist jokes are the order of the day in their social circles, "wink-wink, nudge-nudge." Although they know in the wider society that these attitudes are not socially acceptable, they will continue to deceive themselves that really they are still and will always be in the majority opinion. Their media outlets already feed them daily the BS that this is true in regard to the gay marriage & civil union debate, i.e. "activist judges & courts", "out-of-touch legislatures & governors." I know people like this, and it makes my skin crawl. Just another reason to thank God that I didn't turn out to be a racist, homophobic, sexist, ignorant fuck of a human being.

I go back and forth on him. He definitely has the most talent, but that doesn't mean I always love what he does. Can't think of anyone else that deserves it over him, though. He's the one person I actually look forward to each week, so I guess that's saying something...

same here, my wife and I look forward to see what he does each week. a bit scared for next week since it is disco night. I saw a recent pic of him in drag with some long as boots. I hope he keeps those at home when he sings.

The only performance I've seen so far is his Led Zeppelin cover.. which I thought was bloody fantastic.. now only based on that .. I think he should win.

                    When are the finals anyway???

a bit of a shame. you would think people can get over that by now.

meh. I think it has zero to do with the fact that he's gay and everything to do with the fact that Danny and Kris cater to more similar fans than Danny and Adam. Adam is the type of singer/performer that you either like or don't, and it's hard to see Gokey fans that wanted to stay involved flocking to Adam, IMO.

Not that it matters, as they'll both be fine regardless. Kris is actually probably more well-suited to the saccharine BS the winners are compelled to trot out when they get started anyway, and I actually say that with no disrespect intended to him. He's got a very radio-friendly, James Blunt/Jason Mraz/Train sort of sound to him.

Adam getting signed independent of the show may allow him to do something more fitting to his style.
