With its roots dating back to 1979 its only in the last year that the Harvey Milk school has received any state funding. Whilst schools in New York normally achieve a 50% graduation rate the Harvey Milk School is acheiving a 95% graduation rate.

Whilst educators find it hard enough to discipline kids generally, and deal with homophobia specifically, surely this school can only ensure that young people who are disenfranchised from the education system can find a route back into and get a decent education.

In an ideal world we wouldn't need the Harvey Milk School. I don't agree with segregation, and feel that gay pupils should be taught alongside heterosexual pupils. However, I believe that gay pupils have the right to learn in an environment free from bullying and intimidation, which sadly only the Harvey Milk School provides. Obviously, more needs to be done in schools to prevent harrassment of gay students. Until then we will unfortunately need places like the Harvey Milk School.

I completely agree with him. It's sad that in some environments this is seen as the only way that some kids can get a safe education. Not every gay person, especially kids, should feel like that they need to be rights activitists just to get through the day.

As for the under-current of gay slanging that goes on on [ms] ...I just wonder what the reaction would be if the same sort of joking comments were slung about "niggers" or "gooks" or whichever minority takes your fancy.

Probably the one thing I really don't like about [ms] for an otherwise cool online community.
