Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

    Just got back from matter.

Digweed was phenomenal - we left at 6.15 and he was still going on.

This man seems to get better and better each time I see him - I went with some friends who had never seen him play before, and now they cant wait till the next Bedrock!!!

I have to admit tho I spent quite a bit of time listening to Guy J - who in my opinion played an incredible set - I had a word with him after his set finished and he told me he was working on the follow up to Esperanza - goody!

No pics yet, can barely type - hope all who were there enjoyed it.

Happy Easter and Pesach to one all.

          7.40 a.m.

I'm too worn out to post details ... v little sleep and got to drive back for the football in the morning. Special mentuion to Dzone and FunkyKarma who few in from Dubai ... top top blokes. As ever the UK [ms] crowd was well represented with Chunky, Adzey, Maff and Mighty Greg giving AndyH a send off !

Adzey's got a brilliant photo of himself and AndyH with Diggers !

Great warm up by suprise guest Jimmy Van M - a real treat.

Diggers played 6+ hours of brand new dark music ... building and building and then the last 2 x hours of his main set just releasing and hitting you hard !

Then he did 90 mins of a Renaissance/Northern exposure vibe til they finally kicked him off the decks so they could close.

          I posted this on Bedrock:

"Re: Bedrock last night at matter

Great night, we had a Mercuryserver meetup and the site was very well represented

Jimmy opening up was a lovely suprise and he played a tremendous set, and some real gems.

Managed to get a photo with JD and even had a quick chat with the man himself about why the Bedrock 10th set may never see the light of day (John felt it was very special and to be kept in then memories of those who went, rather than have the music taken apart and over-analysed). I very much respect where he's coming from, much as it pains me to say ! So a big thanks to John for being a top bloke and running such a fantastic night.

To make the point that the 10th Birthday had gone, it was all new music from 12 til 6.30 - honestly its amazing how JD manages to put it all together in such a cohesive format. It was dark driving beats and a set that built bit by bit, hour by hour ... much as I imagine a 6-8 hour set at Twilo or Yellow would. If he'd taken a couple of hours out of there and released it as a GU box set I think we'd realise just how good the programming and music was.

It would have been easy for Diggers to play the classics again - but he's a progressive DJ and it's about looking forward and living in 2009 ... cleary he's enthused by the new music that's out there, searching out the new new tunes as well as running his label, and he must go through a mind boggling amount of tracks each week to do this.

So it wasn't a re-run of 10/10 ... but a brilliant and cutting edge set on its own right.

As for Matter, it's well run and nice to have a bit if room and be able to get to the bar/loos. Thought the lasers were great too ... great view of the DJ booth + you can take some time out, and look down on what Diggers was doing from the balcony and really take in what's going on in the club. The set up looked like a flight simulation console !

But my, was it loud and that dancefloor can vibtrate too much (that's me getting old). Think I'll be investing in some ear plugs next time. The O2 is a pain in the arse to get to/back from.

Stayed til the 7.40 finish ... Everything in Its Right Place was inspired - dunno if JD was blending a couple of versions together, but it sounded awesome as he broke it down and twisted it.

That's it for now, until the 3 x S&D b2b dates in May."

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

Re: Easter Bedrock - review - kind of!

Wurgh, never thought I would be writing this but I was actually very disspaointed. I have been dreaming about the 10-pm - 2am set from Diggers for months so I was actually pissed off to see that JVM was doing the first 2 hours. He is an awesome DJ but how often do we ever get to see John warm up? Plus that is generally my favourite time of night anyway because I much prefer the deep dark stuff rather than later on when the music is much harder..

Anyway, even when John did come on I still didnt think that he was that great. I could appreciate that it was a very clever set whth the programming etc but it just really didnt do it for me and the crowd was not exactly screaming in the way that they usually do at Bedrock. It seemed to get too hard too quickly and never changed from there on. We were loving it from about 4 -5 where it definitly went in to the vortex but as soon as that finished it was so militant that i puked and had to get out of there (sorry for not saying bye again boys, there was no way I was going back on that dancefloor again lol)

Sorry to be so negative but it is the least I have enjoyed a Bedrock for years. I still had fun and it was really good to meet up with the MS lot again, but its a shame especially considering we changed our flights for it (and prob wont be at another one for a year now )

Sweet pic btw Adz, is there any chance you can email me a copy as it seems really small if I just copy and paste it fro, here...?

it was a great night for sure, Diggers started destroying the place, a bit after 4.30am until the time we left (6.00am) as i had to get back for work at 15:00 and we had to do a 6h journey (if not a bit more) from there to Leeds. plus we thought diggers would finish at 6:00... although we didnt stay, im happy he carried on for another hour and a half as im sure whoever stayed, enjoyed it!!
sorry guys for not meeting with you, but our hotel was in greenwich (our room looks exaclty like yours! lol) and we went from there straight to the club.. no pints or anything before matter.. next time i'll plan this better!
i went to room 2 at some point and stayed for 30-45mins and i must say too that guy j played a great set. i think i need to d/l some lives of him, for sure! great performance!
also security, all top blokes, at the bar was always space and someone free so you could order quickly and smoking area was ok. it got better in the morning when the light came out! with the river next to the club and with the weather being so warm, it just reminded me of my clubbing days in the greek islands!
ive got a few pics too and some videos of the night. ill upload them and ill put them here!

                          10/10

next now is s&d in leeds 23rd of may! and at least im next to my home and im not working next day!!! lol
