NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Navy snipers on the fantail of a destroyer cut down three Somali pirates in a lifeboat and rescued an American sea captain in a surprise nighttime assault in choppy seas Easter Sunday, ending a five-day standoff between a team of rogue gunmen and the world's most powerful military.

Let me get this straight.
So white-middle class Americans have been told by their Television sets to be fearful of:
1. Mexicans/Latinos from the South bringing drugs and killings n' shit.
2. African Americans cause mos def they are raging a race war and want to occupy America like how the plebs occupied Wall St.
3. Iranians/Afghans/Any one of middle eastern origin to be quite frank, cause you know Islam...
4. North Koreans/Chinese cause you know everything...
I guess "Somalian pirate" is not the first thing you equate to "intelligent".
One would assume that those bozos would know that they had effectively committed suicide once they captured that US ship captain. Did they really think they were just going to get their ransom and then be left alone? Whether they had killed the guy or not, there was only one way things were going to ultimately wind up for them, which is with a bullet to the brain.

morons...
From what I've seen and read, it would appear that the whole "hijack a ship --> issue a ransom demand --> get paid" thing had become so common as to be formulaic, and the pirates were basically just allowed to get away with it with impunity. It seems unlikely that they gave much thought to what flag was flying -- more like, "Well, there's another ship, let's do our thing."
They've now vowed retribution -- but do they have the sort of organization necessary to do anything about it? Does one band of pirates really care what happens to another band of pirates enough to put their lives on the line? Kinda figured these guys were mostly free-lancing...
I'm kind of surprised that these shipping companies aren't hiring mercenaries to keep security on these ships. Not sure what the going rate is for a small team or if the shipping company could budget for it, but you'd figure that with the increasing frequency of this happening that they would have at least considered it.
I don't think this bodes well for future run in with piracy along the Somalian coast - it's bad enough they don't have any solid government to speak of right now, and with the snipers having killed three of them, it could stoke and re-ignite the tensions that had occurred back in 1993 like the Blackhawk Down incident.
I'm not saying the U.S. didn't do the right thing - they protected a U.S. citizen from a potentially fatal hostage situation and saved his life. But, I don't think the endgame result is going to be any kind of improvement over the piracy issue in the months to come and hostilities towards U.S. and French ships in the region are going to go up as a result.
