ABERCROMBIE & FITCH has agreed to pay ?27 million to bring an end to the dispute about employment policies which, it is claimed, were discriminatory against minority staff. Accused of fostering an "all-white image", it was alleged that the US-based retail giant either sacked or refused employment to nine young people on the basis of their race. Stanford graduate Anthony Ocampo claimed he was told he could not be hired because "there's too many Filipinos", while African American student Carla Grubb said she was given the sack after being given the most menial jobs. "I felt demoralized being the only African American employee and being specifically assigned to dust the store, wash the windows and clean the floors," she said. "I now know that Abercrombie cannot treat other employees of colour in such a manner." While it did not admit any wrongdoing, the company will now pay ?21.5 million to be divided among the litigants, as well as a further ?5.5 million in court costs. US District Court Judge said that A&F must now promote diversity within its workforce and must hire 25 recruiters to hire minority employees. A spokesman for the firm, however, claimed that it was not guilty of discrimination. "We have, and always have had, no tolerance for discrimination," he told The Times. "We decided to settle this suit because we felt that a long, drawn-out dispute would have been harmful to the company and distracting to management."
