Speaker advice needed

I'm thinking of getting some new speakers for my apartment and wanted some that are slim to give me more space and be more pleasing on the eye, while dishing out a clear sound.

I'm not too concerned about bass, as I'm unlikely to crank it up to 11 for fear of all the neighbours rapping on my door !

Looking around I noticed some re-conditioned Beolab 6000's from £850 onwards (much more than I was looking to pay !).



Anyone know of any similar ones on the market ?

try on gumtree I found some pretty cheap beolabs there a while back...you can find real bargains. Better than e-bay.

what kind of amp/cd player etc do you have? ie what is the rest of your system?

An old Sherwood amp and cheap chinese CD player that's lasted 15-years !

Plus I've got a Nad turntable, Technics Mini-disc, Technics Double Cassette, Cambridge audio DAB and Canbridge Audio ipod dock. All separates.

I'm aiming to upgrade gradually - I want decent speakers but size is the issue as my front room is small, so every bit of space counts. But I don't want a mini hi-fi.

The Beolab speakers seem perfect .. so if I got something those or similar I'd prob invest in a new CD player next, maybe a 2nd hand Arcam ... unless I grab a B & O bargain.

I've always found the difference between good speakers and great speakers is that great speakers hold up well at higher volume, without distortion, where you can really hear some of the intricacies of whatever it is you're listening to that you can't hear at lower volume. With that in mind, I think it would be hard for me to justify blowing my wad on audiophile-quality speakers if my living situation didn't permit me to open 'em up. I lived in an apartment a few years ago and had a great set of speakers at the time, and it honestly just bummed me out.

If I were you, I'd get something that is good but not great, because at apartment volume, there isn't going to be that much difference. Save that extra cash, put it towards a stand-alone house, and then buy a set that will really make you happy when you can let 'em breathe.

there is one in Liverpool. They do great deals and have solid equipment. And demo rooms.
Its where I used to buy my separates when I was in Glasgow - highly recomended. IMO.

i concur. just recently sold my house and moved into an apartment and sold my speakers just for this reason; used the money to buy a 65" tv.
