The unauthorised sets are bad and good for the DJ.
Diggers was v unhappy when the 2004 Beruit set came out - but we were all chuffed to bits !
It did have up front tunes - I assume the main reason JD was unhappy was that it could piss off the Producers of those new tracks and potentially they could stop supplying him as a result.
In the longer term it feeds out appetite/enthusiasm - leading us to buy the CD's and see the DJ's live. If our enthusiasm dims, the DJ's popularity reduces and as a consequence their income and livelihood/income reduces.
I'd say things are fine as long as too many sets aren't leaked - if I was the DJ I'd be more pissed off with the file sharing of their official releases and tracks - if people don't buy the CD's, Vinyl and MP3's from Beatport they are not getting paid fully for their productions and labels potentially go bust.
In the main my conscience is clear - I've more than supported the likes of Hernan, Sasha & Diggers over the years - bought all the CD's and seen them live regardless of whether they were the "in thing" at the time. I've travelled across the UK and over to ibiza to catch them - witnessed some amazing sets and encouraged others to check out their work.
Plus I should say that Hernan is a top guy and the nicest/most personable of them all - so do him a favour, if you like the set you got for free from the net, then buy his new Master Series

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.Comment

Most bands allow fans to record their sets in the audience. This happens even more often with jam bands who have followers that will record every set from a particular tour.
For instance, for one of my favorite bands, STS9, you can find well over 50% of their live sets on archive.org and other music archiving websites. The equipment that the fans in the audience use to record these sets are extremely powerful and delivery very good quality considering that they do not have a line in connection. For instance, think back to the S&D bonnarro set, this took place at a music festival where there are hundreds of fans with this type of equipment. If someone in the audience didn't record it I doubt this amazing set would have ever surfaced.
Unfortunately though, at a club, DJs are in a tiny & secure bubble due to the fact that the audience can't just set up a high standing microphone(s) to record the set.
So personally, I think DJs need to give it a break and step out of the comfort zone that has been established for them in a club environment. I don't see why they get so pissed off when a set gets leaked. In the first place, it's a rarity that someone grabs the line-out without them noticing. But when it does happen they just need to let it go and make the best out of it. My favorite bands are recorded nearly every night, no matter if it's a good night or a bad night. They just realize that it's part of the game and make the best of it as a marketing tool. They're also doing a hell of a lot more than a DJ and are prone to a lot more mistakes!Comment

Yeah simonr , but you are a true fan , probably what the Sasha , Digweed , Hernan fanbase essence is all about , If sasha spins in your city and lets you record his set, and tells you not to let it out , I'm 100% sure you would kept it all to your self.,

What disappoints me the most is that people should know better than doing this sort of thing.
Also if there is anybody that knows better on how to manage their career is the dj himself, to let a mix that it's "ok" without your consent just before the release of you disc is a hit below the waist line .Last edited by Haziel; April 30, 2009, 10:36:57 PM.Comment
