I don't see what all the fuss is about. Electronica would be dead and there would be no known DJ's without free flow of information this genre provides. The Greatful Dead were the first to capitalize on this simple concept and it works like a charm. All artists these days make their money off concerts and touring. Good or bad it is just the way it is and I think most artists have accepted that. The only people to lose out are third parties like the suits and ties who used to control the flow. Releasing sets in my opinion is just another form of advertising and if your a good DJ you will catch on quick. However, thats just a fans opinon, but I would have never become a fan and spent large amounts of money on electronica concerts without the unauthorized/authorized sets of Underworld, Gabriel and Dresden, Holden, Zabiela and funny enough a member here Ger Stokes who has been MIA for a while.

i respect every right that the dj has to his or her own work, but property is relative and arbitrary; and especially within EDM. a lot of these true school producers make choons so that djs will spin them. they even derive the real joys just from delivering to the djs that perform for all the various scenes.

there is a old artistic saying that goes a bit like this:

"the record companies the pimp, the artist - the hoe, the stage is the corner, and the audience is the trick"

btw, the MPAA and RIAA are all faggots. i hope they continue to fall.

I passionately love sharing music !! I passionately agree 100% with you about the MPAA and RIAA .

Which is one more reason I do not want to supply them with any more ammunition.

Don't you think you're getting a bit too carried away? Who's giving up what ethics here on MS? We don't even know who ripped and released the set, it was found on groovesite.ar or whatever.

Which brings me back to my point that it's on the interweb, you can't dictate others to uphold the same ethics you do.

Let's say for a moment that we can't control what people do, and people will do what they want, and a set has been leaked.

I don't understand this other argument that only GOOD sets can be released.

Good or bad, it gives me an idea of how any DJ plays so I can have realistic expectations.

I'd rather hear a range of sets and decide for myself if he's worth my time, than to hear so much good shit that I get bitterly disappointed when I catch him live.

Good or bad isn't the issue. Everyones taste is different anyway. Sound quality however can make a huge difference to any mix! If a particular artist always chooses good quality, how fair is it to release something in bad quality. ?? Hernan is way too big for any of this to really effect him. It's just about respect.

No I don't believe I am getting carried away , it's a subject I am passionate about!! Why do I have to conform to everyone else. ???

Someone on the Hernan thread stated that Hernan had asked for it not to be released.

I can dictate as much as I like I don't actually expect any one to go against their own code of ethics. I just wish I could be equally respected instead of being howled down.!!

So OK, I understand what people are saying here. I understand especially about not wanting to have newer sets leaked. What I was asking about before is what reason might a DJ have for sets 4 years older or more not being leaked.

Contemplate and hypothesize on this please if you have any ideas. I am truly curious as to why this is the case.

Fans with a need to get ahold of every piece of what their favourite artists do have been around at any time. I am also "guilty" because from certain bands, DJs and producers, I try to get everything I can too be it officially or unofficially released. So from a fan's perspective I can understand the everlasting hunt for new material no matter where it comes from.

On Mercuryserver, we have always tried to work WITH the artists and not against them so the only opinion who really counts for us is the opinion from the artist or his representants. Each time we have been asked to remove a thread, we did what we were asked for no matter if we agreed or not because it is not our cup of tea but somebody else's property that's used against their will.

Diggers was v unhappy when the 2004 Beruit set came out - but we were all chuffed to bits !

keep in mind that Diggers did play that same version on his kiss100 show a few weeks after it was released.

There is a little story behind the Beirut mix and since 5 years have passed since this, I guess it is ok to put some light on it because it is a good example how you can work with artists. We got the Beirut recording pretty early thanks to our connections and informed John about it knowing many more people will have the scene release soon. John downloaded the Beirut mix from us and hosted it in pieces on his Kiss100 show in the following weeks so it had at least an official touch. When mixes are leaked on the Internet, it is too late to stop the avalanche but sometimes you can make something good out of it in the end. If that's not possible there is always the Delete button.
