    The Machinist

Has anybody seen this yet? I think its only playing in select cities - fortunately for me Toronto is one of them! I'm hoping to go see it sometime this week...

The guy behind it, is the same guy who made Session 9 .. by far the most disturbing movie I've ever seen!! I find the potential of the human mind much scarier than anything supernatural..

    anyone else?

It wasn't bad, but it didn't quite work. I thought of it as being similar to Monster, only with better direction. I say that in the sense that you have an actor taking on a pretty drastic physical transformation that overpowers the rest of the film (story, plot, dialogue, etc.) rather than advancing the story itself. Monster I thought had an amazing performance, but the film itself really wasn't that great, and was elevated much higher than it would have if someone else was in the role. Bale's quite good, but like I said, he takes so much away from the rest of the story, that you'll be talking more about what he's done to himself for the role more than you will about anything else in the film. I liked it to a degree, as it reminded me of what David Cronenberg's Spider should have been, and a hell of a lot more coherent.

Great input! still gotta check it out for myself, though its probably better that I don't go in with unrealistic expectations!

I agree with what you say about Spider... what a dissappointment.

      Did you see Session 9?

Yeah, really, really liked the way the film built up the atmosphere and the performances from David Caruso and the rest of the cast. But the ending explained a bit too much at the very end. Lop off bits and peices of the explanation in the last 10 minutes and the film would have been seriously tight. Amazing idea to put the film in an abandonned insane asylum, and the motives for being there were so sound.

The Machinist however, kind of wallowed in stuff from other films, which I think kind of bothered me. It pays tribute to a lot of other films (including a lot of Polanski films like Rosemary's Baby and some of his more paranoid fare), but doesn't really distinguish itself outside of what Bale did to himself. I liked The Machinist for the most part, but I felt like it was a bit of an underachiever.

Really good film ... similar to Momento - and of course a fantastic peformance by Bale..

Very well shot too, but the reveal was kinda disappointing compared to Memento's.
