    Skinny Puppy boycott?

A friend of mine works at a college radio station, and has recently been contacted by this ultra-conservative group, PABAAH, to stop playing Skinny Puppy. This is the email he recieved:

In the past few months a band by the name of Skinny Puppy has slandered Bush. At several of their concerts over the Summer they have simulated an assassination of the president. On their current Fall tour they simulated a beheading similar to the ones happening in Iraq. When the vocalist pulls off their hoods he reveals the terrorists to be Bush and Cheney. This is unacceptable and I encourage you not to play their latest record, The Greater Wrong of the Right, that has been indicated by their record label as being played on your station.

Conservatives are currently a majority of the populace now and we have voted into power a majority in every level of government. The people of this country have the power as evident by our boycott of the Reagan miniseries, the Superbowl, and the Dixie Chicks.

If you still choose to play their music we have the ability to put financial pressure on your station through boycotts. Please remove Skinny Puppy from rotation or we will have no choice but to boycott your station.

If you decide to stop playing Skinny Puppy as well as consider changing the format in order to provide more fair and balance we will consider removing you from the list.

Once again, this is a college radio station, which is not governed by big advertising dollars. I'm not quite sure how they intend to boycott the station. In response, the station has put Skinny Puppy in HEAVY rotation, with one dj last friday playing a SP track every other song.

ok. skinny puppy definately helped build this scene we are involved in. find out about skinny puppy before you slander. nivek ogre, the vocalist, has ALWAYS been extremely political so this comes as no surprise.

skinny puppy is an electro and industrial live act from 1979 to now. there was a stint after 93 they didn't created any music. they went back on tour early this year after releasing an album.

skinny puppy isn't for everyone, but they are my favorite band and always will be. they have done things with electronics that no one has before.

Yes, I think that the mock beheadings and the terrorist hoods are in bad taste - there has to be limit and I think that this surpases it. For a political group to try to put pressure on in this manner though is completely wrong. I hope that they don't really have the influence that they say they do. Probably not. Good on the radio station.

Note: I haven't seen or heard of the Skinny Puppys so I don't really know how factual the info in the original email is. From reading the rest of it I wouldn't be surprised if they had exaggerated it anyway.

ya no shit, I'm not conservative and don't really like them, but if you're gonna demean the president, at least have some fucking class, regardless of who you are or what your status is.

I saw Skinny Puppy for the first tme in the end of the 80ties....they had a freaky show on stage like no other band had this time (maybe besides Alien Sex Fiend he he)...throwing meat around and messing with blood and Death sequences all the time. They were pioneers and ALWAYS political...surely sometimes in a radical way but that?s Art for Christ sake. Some people really live the land of the free philosophy.

i thought it was manchester and the whole tony wilson thing?

btw, skinny puppy's sound is crap. i've tried listening to them for many years, and i never clicked with their sound.

but alot of peope like them and they have influenced a lot of great edm.

does anyone else care if an artist gets banned anymore?

but yeah, i thought the beheading was a cool stage antic. i still remember when they got banned for doing a live vivisection.

SP was one of my favorite bands in the 90's, and they, as pioneers of industrial music, unquestionably played a role in the development of the music we all listen to today.

With that said, it isn't for the faint of heart -- very aggressive and cacaphonic music. It will always remember it fondly, but it is frankly a bit rough when I listen to it now (although I haven't heard any of the recent stuff).

That someone would say this, I think, is actually the most troubling part of this post, but I'll leave it at that, lest this gets kicked to the politics forum...
