QUESTION FOR DJ'S Which Cartridge to buy?

Alrighty, I've had my ortofon DJ's for almost nine and a half years and it's time for a change. First of all I LOVE ORTOFON, so which ortofon cartridge would you recommend?

I just talked with my buddy who's pretty knowledgable recommended the Q-Bert ortofons. He said the main reason he uses them is because they have one of the highest voltage outputs for the ortofon series... He mentioned he isn't too big on the actual stylus as he's had two Q-Bert stylus's break on him, which he just replaces with the Nightclub Stylus's but he loves the Q-Bert cartridges.

My buddy dj's atleast twice a week out at clubs and all he uses is serrato. I'm most likely going to go with his recommendation unless someone has some great reason not to.

I plan on using them mainly for 95% Serato and 5% on my old records...

Any recommendations on where to buy from in the U.S. as well. Thanks for any help!!

Yeah the only one I could find was this one...

I've had a pair of Trackmaster II's for 7 years. Now I'm wanting a change. Figure since I'm going with Serato, I wanted to get new needles. Any suggestions? Anyone hear anything good about Whitelabels by Shure? What about Ortofons? Thanks ahead of time.

which had no info on those Q-Bert ortofon's I was asking about. Maybe noone's ever used the Q-Berts before either?

It seemed as though they were talking about the Shure's in that thread as well.

Shit I didn't even think about posting this question in the DJ'n section. Mods if you can, can you please switch this thread to the Dj'n forum... sorry.

Personally, I fu<king hated the Ortofon Dj's.....Cueing up a record was always a nightmare with those things as they tend to skip when cueing... I bought a pair and took them back the very same day!

Homeskizzle. If you are going to use them on Serato or any other control vinyl, you should look for a stylus that works with those types of control records..

A lot of the "needles" out there will wreck your control vinyl and wear it out quicker than the ones that are made to work with control vinyl...

Google something like "best needles to use with Serato" or somethin glike that...See what comes up..

        Hope that helps.

Also, the Serato forum has a lot of threads about your very question.

        I use these:

^^ I use the M44Gs. Cheap, reliable, good low frequencies, solid tracking, pretty light on the records. But I just play in my own apartment for the most part, so I'm not going to spend tons on ultra fancy needles.

Can't go wrong with a decent pair of Shure's.

Damn I would seriously never even considered buying shure... Every one of my friends has always bought ortofon so I never really considered shure.

I guess I always thought shure was more for the "hiphop" crowd and ortofon was built more towards the "house" crowd.

I will definitely have to check them out but I'll have to admit, being so happy with ortofon over the years, I'm a bit biased.

Thanks very much for the links and suggestions!!

Yeah, that's the brand recognition of Shure, especially the M447s.. The M44Gs are basically the versatile needle that are billed as covering well into the mixing realm. They all look like your traditional needles on clunky carts... They also have the Shure Whitelabel designed to look a bit more hip for the mixing crowd. I haven't tried it, but I've heard that they are very picky in the way they are set up and that they had a tendency to break ridiculously easily...but that's not the most uncommon complaint in high-end needles where you practically have to make that cantilever the width of a hair.

I'm not going to tell you that my needles can rival the sound quality of a top-flight Ort... but they're $50-$80 bucks whereas some of those top Concord models are like $150-$200 or more. They've been reliable and they sound solid. That's enough for me at this point.

I use the m447...they are ok I guess...I am thinking about getting the Ortofon DigiTrack they are way too expensive for me though. Like 150$ a pop insane. Anyway the m447's are pretty cheap and they are ok...I honestly haven't used any other ones so I can't say for sure.

i have the ortofons nightclub and im very satisfied with them! a bit expensive but you might find a good deal on eBay! i think i got mine for £30 from ebay about a year ago and that was for both cartridges plus an extra needle!

never tried the shures, so cant really compare the two.. definately very happy with the ortofons tho!
