Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

you think this is mostly a debate about the music rather than purely his skills as a dj?
because my favorite period is definately '97-'99. i stopped listening to sasha all the time around 2000 when the music for me got boring. i listen to him again now but my favorite is still from back then so maybe it's not him, it's you.

I suppose part of the mystique has gone for me due to the digital age. I used to mix on turntables, and whilst decent and able to hold my own at any party, I was never in Sasha's league (funnily enough!). Now I've got into using Traktor, and the records are no longer impossible to find, it's not such a big deal. Plus there's a big difference dragging yourself out on a (maybe) wet Leeds Sunday night, to going out for another night at something like Sonar!

Sorry to sound like an Angry Boy Child....but a lot of you ppl are really bitching here...missing the good old days and bla bla. Music evolves and people change if you were with a girl for like 15 years the likelyhood would be pretty big that you get borred of her and want something new or at least that you just go separate ways as you devlop... and now your talking about a dj??? tastes in music change, you may not like what he is playing now but others do...I am sure there is someone out there who is playing your dream song/set right now and you don't even know it... my point is that all of you saying Sasha lost his shit need to get out there and fall in love with a different dj and stop spoiling it for those who like it as it is...

This happens everywhere in all spheres of life a bunch of OLD motherfuckers talking about how it used to be .... well it USED to be but it ISN't anymore. Get over it.

I'm an old motherfucker who likes how it used to be, but still buzzes with the excitement and anticipation of hearing the fresh new stuff ... it's nice to nip back into the time warp occasionally, but not progressive or evolutionary to get stuck in it.

                  @Shpira

So you're the one that goes with the flow, and accept/likes everything that's new ? I can imagine most of your points, but at the other side it's a bit strange. What's wrong with people who like the old Sasha because he had more feelings in the music in the past ? And it's not only Sasha, I think it's the whole music industry. Computers are fun, but it also brings the problem that everybody can make music (especially these days). You don't have to play a instrument anymore. Sometimes we forget what good music is about (this doesn't count for Sasha, but it's more for the normall music industry).

I'm btw not a old motherfucker I have to say, I'm just a bit tired of the minimal techy stuff that gets bored after a few times (It's sometimes just without a soul). Somebody on the other pages mentioned it too. Today everybody can make music with a pc and some midi controlls (tha'ts why the market is so overfloated), but there are only a few ones that can make music with a soul, but you have search and search and search.

You can say "go on, get over it", but that's not easy for somebody who fell in love with the "old" Sasha and with music with a soul. Hope you can imagine that...

Sure does, and its a bright side of this world - we are not the same!
But isn't this a discussion topic named The Old Sasha vs. The New Sasha?
What's wrong then with talking about old days vs. new days, some of us might like Sasha the way he is now and some others amongst us like him the way he used to be, it's all natural and healthy, no reason to be an Angry Boy Child, people are different, taste is what differs from one to another human being and this is just the discussion, no one shoud feel bad in here for liking/talking about the old or the new Sasha.. this's why we're here at this topic right, to be on one or another side and exchange our thoughts and expirience?

There is someone.. there are many of them, happilly
which's only a sign that that kind of music did not die, despite the music evolution,
so i guess its also a sign that there's a big quality input in the music we're feeling homesick in here talking about Sasha's oldtimes and there's nothing to deny that.
And once more, the topic says old vs. new... so if all of the ppl loving old Sasha would "get out of here and stop spoiling", this topic would lose its primary purpose, boy.. get over it and love Sasha the way he is now and the way you love him, but let other people love him the way they do and stand behind what you've said .. --->

great point. seems like for all the music out there probably only 1% is actually quality.

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

I think we're comparing both the music and Sasha, obviously they influence each other. If the music is 100% shit of course the DJ can only play shit. But Sasha has the ear for tunes. Come on, there was absolutely nothing like NE when it came out.

There are 3 factors here: The quality of music produced today, the proliferation of music thanks to the internet, and the DJ.

The quality of the music and the proliferation of it is a moot point because the DJ doesn't control it, and they level the playing field. So the only element here is the DJ who listens and picks out the tunes, who programs the sets, who is up there 'mixing.'

No one's whinging here, we're discussing about the history and evolution or progrssion of a DJ like Sasha who has been in the limelight for so many years, who has made an impression on so many of us.

Shpira, maybe you don't have the benefit of nostalgia that we have, maybe if that number under your username indicates your real age, you haven't had the benefit of living through some of the most memorable times of your personal life with this music, and actually grow old with this sound and these DJs.

So if you really want to contribute to this discussion, how about you tell us what you actually like about current-day Sasha.

Sasha's music has evolved -- asit should do!

I have some old sets of his live from 1989 and 1990 at Shelley's in the UK, and I still go to hear him live nowadays form tim eot time. I think he is much more musical, much more polished, rocks the party harder, uses technology well, etc.... all in all I think he has gotten better with age.

Thereīs way too much music out there, and itīs way too easy to get your hands on it.

Thereīs an excessive "turnover" in the music being played by DJīs, because not only is there too much of it being produced, but also sets become available way too easily.

So i think itīs not just a question of Sasha being better or worse now, itīs also because the stuff you get to hear from him has lost itīs uniqueness, it gets diluted. And that "uniqueness" makes up for a lot in our relationship with music.
