So i think itīs not just a question of Sasha being better or worse now, itīs also because the stuff you get to hear from him has lost itīs uniqueness, it gets diluted. And that "uniqueness" makes up for a lot in our relationship with music.
But what about DJs like Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo? There are still DJs playing good tracks.

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

So you're the one that goes with the flow, and accept/likes everything that's new ?
No, I didn't say that. I think change is a natural way of everything and once I don't like something I'll move on. Then I'll come back to it in a while and by that time I would have changed as well and maybe I will like it again...example: I got pretty bored of Nick Warren around a year ago (maybe a little while before). It seemed to me that he was recycling the same set over and over again...and it just pissed me off. Then recently some members of this board (think it was feather) made me pay attention again. SO i downloaded a set and liked it. Another example would be Zabiela...hated the shit he did with Fanciulli but loving the return to the old JZ since the last Renaissance Masters he did.

I'm just a bit tired of the minimal techy stuff that gets bored after a few times (It's sometimes just without a soul).
i agree with you there...its true a lot of the stuff just misses substance there is no denying that but thats talking in general not Sasha as far as I am concerned.

IMHO he kinda lost it around...2005 maybe can't tell exactly and then he got it back pretty quickly late 2006 probably. Notable difference between this and some comments here is that I didn't reminisce on the "good old days" I just started listening to Cattaneo more

no one shoud feel bad in here for liking/talking about the old or the new Sasha.. this's why we're here at this topic right, to be on one or another side and exchange our thoughts and expirience?
Yes, true. Although I didn't attempt to make anyone feel bad about liking or disliking the current stuff Sasha "spins"...I was trying to point out a flaw in the debate itself. Its like saying Rock and Roll is the devil in the 1960's or debating whats better jazz or blues - both are great as far as I am concerned and thats pretty much how I feel about Sasha's music its been top notch all along. The problem is that people loose perspective.

Shpira, maybe you don't have the benefit of nostalgia that we have, maybe if that number under your username indicates your real age, you haven't had the benefit of living through some of the most memorable times of your personal life with this music, and actually grow old with this sound and these DJs.
As feather here nicely demonstartes...its all about nostalgia. People asociate the music sasha was playing a while back with the best periods of their lives i.e. their careless days. So its natural that they have a slight problem to relate to the new sound. If you talk to some of the people who have jut got into EDM they will swear that the music Sasha plays today is the bomb and then in all likelyhood in like 10 years they will miss this sound (by then sasha would have retired?? maybe lol)

So if you really want to contribute to this discussion, how about you tell us what you actually like about current-day Sasha.
Furthemore I would argue (having listened to Sasha's sets from as far back as '94 that its all good. I personally like the period between 1999 - 2003 best but I still think its all good. For the record I didn't listen to EDM in that period of time...well I did some psy trance but not much...anyway...how I feel about current day Sasha...hmmm Involver 2 was one of the best (if not the best) albums of 2008 and I still download and listen to all his sets (which is more then I can say for most other dj's) so he must be doing something right.

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

Well I didn't mean it that way. I concede that nostalgia has a lot to do with it, but what I meant to say is we've had the benefit of listening to a select few DJs for many years and have heard their sounds change.

So I don't see this thread as a 'good ol' days' whinge. By nostalgia I meant most of us old foggies have a good perspective on Sasha, just as we would on Digweed and Seaman and Oakie etc.

The bulk of this discussion is about how Sasha's sound has changed, how he used to put more effort into picking out tunes, into programming his sets.

The prevalent thought around Sasha is that no one comes close to what he does IF he is in the mood to play. We get one amazing set from Sasha and it's like the second coming around these parts, and it magically wipes out all the crap he puts out.

You can argue that Sasha's sound has evoloved, but that's a given since it IS 2009. But so has DJs like Fortier, Van M, Pappa, Terry Lee Brown Jr, Digweed, Cattaneo, Burridge, Howells and everyone else from the old guard I can't remember right now.

I don't know about you guys but how often does Sasha surprise these days? Most of his sets (with the exception of that recent Malta set, WMC, involver 2 party, thank you mix) are simply relentless intensity, there are hardly any dips or variations. It's programmed to maintain a high that drives crowds nuts. The only differende between that and a trance set is the lack of cheesy vocals and melodies. If you want another analogy, Sasha sets are like Michael Bay movies.

Maybe he is a victim of his own success because the crowd expects that from him, and as a headliner he usually comes on at peak time. But again, I just don't see how DJs like Digweed and Cattaneo continue to do what they do on such a regular basis, surprise me, give me the chills, get into my head and turn everything inside out.

(Also, your previous post is just another knee-jerk reaction because you don't like us comparing what might be the 'old days' vs the current day. Those arguments can be applied to any old foggies reminiscing over anything including the price of Starbucks coffee.)

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

Ok this^^ is pretty much the only post on this thread that makes sense to me.

I understand what you are saying...but you can't expect a dj to have an intimate relationship with his audience once he has reached the level of fame that Sasha has. I mean yeah sure there is Digweed and maybe Cattaneo but I honestly don't think they compare...don't get me wrong I am not talking about performance, i am talking about fame. In my experiance anyway Sasha is pretty much the only DJ that has true fucking grupies i.e. fans that practically worship him...let me also say that I am not one of them...I like his music most of the time and it ends there for me.

Another thing that I would like to add is that Cattaneo and Digweed IMO are dj's that create the "Vortex" almost all the time. I have rarely been disapointed by their performances (once by Digweed at a festival performance adn never by Cattaneo) Sasha on the other hand IMO is all about wham-bam tactics. Most of the time he will drop bomb after bomb pretty much throught the set and that kinda gets stale but when he is given the opportunity to shine he does just that e.g. the Malta set.

I think its all about picking the right venue for you as an artist...if you don't feel the crowd then you can't be expected to bring your best game. Thats just my oppinion and maybe I am wrong.

God now I feel like listening to 7 hour set by Sasha hmmm where is that Warung beach set from way back???

Re: The old Sasha vs The new Sasha

The only members whose posts here have any true validity imo are the one's that go see sasha at least 3-5 times a year. You can't experience a sasha set at home the same, even on the worlds best speakers the same as you can in a club live.

Secondly, If you were taking drugs back in the late 90's early '00's, those memories are going to be extra special, because why you ask? You were feeling EXTRA GOOD THEN!!!

Lastly, if you are younger (20 - 25) right now, it would be only natural for you kind of feel as though you missed out on the best EDM has had to offer which was during the mid 90's until early '00. Any big dj will confirm that.

It was fun while it lasted...

I'm inclined to agree but at the same time, we could say the same about Digweed or Cattaneo or any of the DJs. Some music, some sets, are best heard on a loud sound system, but surely if we're talking about the flow or programming, that can be guaged in any setting?

The flip side is, when you're in the midst of it on the dancefloor, you would probably be less concerned with the flow as long as the DJ is mantaining the bpm or energy, which imo is what Sasha does more often than not.

What Peru set DZone? Care to share? It's funny.. I listened to that Orlando set like 5 times and thought it was garbage. I think we all like malta and The Thank you cuz they have melodies which were hard to come by last couple years.

old Sasha was mostly a fairy.
