Does anyone have a update on this link. In my managerial economics class everyone states how are unemployment rate is actually no that bad compared to the great depression. However, I always try to state that people who work an hour week are considered employed and that current employement is highly overstated. I would like to see how they calculate that statistic.Comment

There is the official report. Look at Table A-12 on page 19. The number the media reports is the U-3 number. U-6 is a much more accurate number which includes part-time workers wanting full time jobs, discouraged workers and marginally attached workers.

I don't think they answer your question specifically. Seems the methods used today were just being developed back then.
Here is a pdf with data back to 1940. Oldest I could find on the site.
