What a weekend. Three nights on the row with Sasha and John was an immense experience and one my body I am sure is not thanking me for!
Cream @ Nation
The tour could not have started on a more weird note. Around 2:30 Sasha dropped Jon Hopkins - Light Through The Veins followed by his Doves remix during which the lights in the Main Room at Cream were turned on and a bouncer simply shouting at us to "Get out!", unfortunately some people had taken some bad turns and the Police had decided that it be shut down. Thankfully we got out handy but some as Simon has said were in the club waiting until 4am to be let out.
Although the night was ended rather prematurely, John absolutely tore the place apart with some amazing records. He was absolutely immense. Sasha on the other hand I thought was not on the best form, however someone said that he had not been well in the week so maybe that was a contributory factor. If I was only doing the one night I would have been a wee bit gutted, but alas, I wasn't.
Quick mention to Jemmy for a sterling warm up on the first night @ Cream, easily the best out of the three nights.
The one memorable record of Sasha's set, which I am sure Simon was hating me for all weeked, was this record, I didn't stop banging on about it:
This sounded amazing, I was hoping this was going to be played over the next two nights and well...
Godskitchen @ Air
Night two, after some sleep it was on to Birmingham for Gods. We arrived at Gods at around 11:20 and the queue for even those with tickets was huge. We just about got in for the last 20 minutes of the warm up DJ.
Sasha started this night, and the first hour of music was amazing. We had a cracking view from the balcony of the the DJ booth of the two in action for the first two hours. Sasha did not disappoint, he dropped that record that I spoke of before and the place was going mad. He was really playing some great music, thought it was far different to what he was playing @ Fabric two weeks earlier.
Then John came on, and well, again, he was freaking awesome. It is amazing to watch him with his little red light scanning through his CDs. The speed that he does it is brilliant! Just goes to show how well he must know every record he plays. Another great hour from John to continue his fine form from the friday night.
The last hour was a blast, dropping Donna Summer I Feel Loved, Sasha's Doves remix and then, after not hearing it the first night, John dropping Guy J Lamur (Henry Saiz remix) as the last tune. Now that was a way to end it! John got on the microphone and thanked the crowd for an amazing night at the end which was nice to hear.
Great night, the thought on the sunday afternoon as we drove up to Leeds was one more to go!
Victoria Works Warehouse, Leeds
I saw Sasha here back in August, so I knew the vibe of the place before hand. The final night of the 'tour' and the real test as to how mentally and physically tired we both were!!!
John opened this night with the same record he opened with at Cream, male vocal which I think someone over on Bedrock believes is a Chelonis R Jones number, saying 'We just got started' (I think!!) His first hour was solid, just amazing records, felt like a bit of a warm up to Sasha's hour if I am honest. Then Sasha came on, carried on from his fine from the previous night, dropping Nhar Mithril which had the place going mad.
It was now that the tiredness really started to kick in, but John was playing records that you just couldn't just stand there to, they really made you move! We were in to the last two hours by this point. Sasha must have really been enjoying himself as he dropped Ladytron around 4am. Then the last hour was banging. Lamur, a dub version of the Doves, I cannot really remember now, my body is still a wee bit frazzled! And to finish, John dropped Sasha's full remix of The Doves.
All that was left was for John to thank the crowd for coming out to see them both, Sasha had gone by this point, maybe he had to be somewhere, maybe he wasn't feeling the best, but I thought he could have at least shown some appreciation to the crowd, but oh well, c'est la vie.
Highlight of the night was walking out of the club at the same time as John, and him looking at Simonr and saying'Hi Simon'. It made me laugh anyway, we can't all be on first name terms with 'Superstart DJ's'!!
Soooooooooooo.....
That was that, three dates with the boys. Brilliant brilliant weekend, not that the bank manager will thank me for, or for the most part my body.
I would have liked to have seen the two properly finish the nights off. At Cream this WOULD HAVE been the case but unforseen circumstances prevailed. Just felt at the next two nights that they could have really dug into their record boxes but it wasn't meant to be.
Many thanks to Simonr for being a willing partner in crime for all three nights, great to see Hydrosonic at Godskitchen too.
Hope that my Tolstoy esque review isn't too boring.
it IS incredible isn't it??
STILL pumpin out great set after great set...never cheesed out, never sold out, never lost his touch..
Simply does not get any better than Hernan
