ive got the kenwood 808 which has a specific ipod control.
if u connect with just a usb connection u will have to select tunes on your ipod rather than using your headunit.
if you get a headunit with ipod control you can stash away your ipod and the rest is easy.
alpine do a good range of decent headunits starting at around £200. make sure you get one with a rotary knob otherwise scrolling through long playlists can be a pain.
So let me get this right… you don’t want to buy a new radio but are deciding the purchase of your next car ($13k-18k) based on ipod connectivity??? Apple must love you mate.
Lots of new cars come with USB inputs or at least offer it as an option. Most fords offer that, my ford explorer has it, tho I cannot get it to wok with my itouch, only the older iPods.

Most new cars and car radios will play mp3 & wma discs. I burn 700MB onto a CD. Its less hassle than a ipod and you don't have to aggro of hiding your iPod in the car when you go some places. Its great on long journeys I just burn a long set and go
