        Re: melbourne

ok so what we did today was, went to marios in brunswick for breakky, had scrambled eggs, spinach and mush on toast - then went to this crazy bookshop over the road and brought a book on melbourne graffiti.

after that, i went to science works, got blunted, went in and looked at the starwars exhibition, which wass super fucking awesome...

after that i went back to town, walked around, took some pics of melb graffiti which ill post later and then caught the 109 back to kew

kinda gutted that im leaving tommm, but i have a life back in nz and i miss my dog

managed to not catch swine flu so far, i guess lol - hoping that work decides to quarantine me anyway lol - paid 2 days off...

anyway, im going to bed soon, have to leave early in the morning. cheers for all your help ms - as usual!

Don't mean to hijack the thread but since we're discussing downunder, Didi whats going on in Auzzieland against Indians? Heard the locals are out beating down brown students nearly everyday (perhaps an Indian exaggeration) and there is a notable movement in India against the Auzzies i.e. Indian consumers stopped buying products imported from Australia, famous people who were invited to Australian universities to receive honorary awards in the media and arts categories are turning down the awards, Bollywood, which was spending millions filming in Austrialia is now making a unified move against returning to film there, and various other things.

Heard it's been rather hostile, have you heard anything?

My parents just got into town yesterday and while talking of events back home, this came up.

It's weird, I've heard mentions of it from colleagues but I have not seen anything here in Sydney at all.

                            Re: melbourne

It is happening both here and in Sydney I'm ashamed to say. Unfortunately I think the media have made it worse. I think it started more as nasty people picking on soft targets, i.e. students travelling alone on public transport, a lot of whom are Indian. But when the Indian part was emphasised they became a more specific target. Nasty people went , "That's a good idea ! " It's a vicious circle. The police here have reacted well and are patrolling public transport etc. But there is no shadow of a doubt that we do have a strong racist element in some parts of the population.

I really hope it can be worked out. India and Australia have many areas of mutual advantage.

I think the tension in sydney is mainly between the lebanese & the indian communities. The indian kids were probably targeted because of a lack of situational awareness, travelling alone at night in the dodgier western suburbs of sydney listening to ipods, carrying laptops etc. Definately not a situation that I would want to put myself in. Then the media blew it out of proportion and it got turned into a political issue - I think the Chinese government took the oppurtunity to have a crack at us, ironically on the anniversary of the tiananmen square massacare
